Regional transport hub

Speaking at the ceremony to announce the resolutions on the merger of provinces, the decision to establish the provincial Party Committee and the leadership personnel of Vinh Long province on June 30, when mentioning the potential and advantages of the new Vinh Long province (merging the three provinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh , and Vinh Long), Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court Le Minh Tri said that the province has a strategic location in the center of the Mekong Delta, with an interwoven waterway and road transport system, convenient intra-regional and inter-regional connections, creating conditions for the development of dynamic economic corridors.

Located between the lower reaches of the Tien and Hau rivers and bordering the East Sea, Vinh Long province plays the role of a water and road traffic hub of the Mekong Delta region. In recent times, many key national and provincial projects have been implemented synchronously, bringing about a clear spillover effect, conveniently connecting Vinh Long with provinces in the Mekong Delta region and key economic zones in the South, Ho Chi Minh City through key traffic routes such as National Highway 1, National Highway 60, National Highway 53, National Highway 53B, National Highway 57, National Highway 57B, National Highway 57C, National Highway 54, National Highway 80, the Trung Luong - My Thuan, My Thuan - Can Tho expressways, along with the system of My Thuan 1, My Thuan 2 bridges, Rach Mieu bridge, Co Chien bridge, Ham Luong bridge, Can Tho bridge...

In particular, as a province with Tien and Hau rivers flowing through, Vinh Long also has a convenient waterway traffic system, with 6 large river mouths flowing into the East Sea, including Dai estuary, Ba Lai estuary, Ham Luong estuary, Co Chien estuary, Cung Hau estuary and Dinh An estuary. Along with that, many inter-provincial and national waterway transport routes pass through, typically the Vung Tau - Thi Vai - Ho Chi Minh City - My Tho - Can Tho transport route; Ho Chi Minh City - Ca Mau route; Co Chien river route from Co Chien estuary to Tien river junction; Dinh An estuary route - Cambodian border (via Hau river). These are important waterway transport routes connecting the Mekong Delta with the East Sea, connecting with the whole country and internationally.

Breakthrough motivation

In addition to key traffic projects that have been put into operation, a series of strategic traffic infrastructure projects with spillover effects, connecting localities in the region, between the Mekong Delta and other regions of the country are being invested in Vinh Long province such as Rach Mieu 2 bridge (connecting Dong Thap - Vinh Long), Dai Ngai bridge (connecting Vinh Long - Can Tho city), Cua Dai bridge (connecting Vinh Long - Dong Thap), Can Tho 2 bridge (connecting Vinh Long - Can Tho city) and intra-provincial connecting bridge projects such as Ba Lai 8, Dinh Khao, Co Chien 2... These are very important traffic infrastructure projects, creating momentum to promote socio-economic development, ensuring national defense, security, improving people's lives in the Mekong Delta in general, Vinh Long province in particular.

In particular, the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge Project has a total investment of more than 6,800 billion VND, the main cable-stayed bridge was completed on April 30, 2025, and is expected to open to traffic on the occasion of National Day, September 2, 2025. This is one of the country's key traffic projects. When put into operation, it will contribute to meeting the increasing transportation demand on National Highway 60 - the coastal corridor connecting the southern coastal provinces with Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast provinces, reducing the load on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge, which is often congested, especially during rush hours, holidays, and Tet.

Also on National Highway 60, the Dai Ngai Bridge Project (connecting Vinh Long - Can Tho City) is being urgently constructed. This is a special-grade road traffic project, with an investment capital of 7,962 billion VND. The project has a total length of more than 15 km, starting at the intersection of National Highway 54 (Vinh Long Province); ending at the intersection of National Highway Nam Song Hau (Can Tho City). The project consists of 2 main bridges including Dai Ngai 1 Bridge over Dinh An Channel, more than 2.5 km long, 19 m wide. The main cable-stayed bridge has 2 towers 110 m high (from the bridge deck), main span 450 m; Dai Ngai 2 Bridge is 862 m long, balanced cantilever over Tran De Channel, bridge deck 17.5 m wide.

Of which, Dai Ngai 2 Bridge was completed on January 5, 2025, and is expected to be put into operation on the occasion of National Day, September 2. Meanwhile, Dai Ngai 1 Bridge is being accelerated by contractors to ensure project progress.

According to the schedule, Dai Ngai Bridge will be basically completed in 2027, completed and put into operation in 2028, helping to connect the entire National Highway 60, creating convenient traffic connections between the southern coastal provinces and Ho Chi Minh City, shortening travel time, reducing transportation costs, goods circulation, expanding trade and breaking the monopoly of National Highway 1, shortening about 80 km compared to National Highway 1 when traveling from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City.

Meanwhile, the Dinh Khao Bridge Project, connecting the two provinces of Vinh Long and Ben Tre (old), was approved by the Prime Minister in October 2024. The project is about 4.3 km long; invested in the scale of a grade III delta road, with a design speed of 80 km/h; the route and bridges on the route are 12 m wide, the completed phase is 20.5 m wide, site clearance is completed once; the Dinh Khao Bridge across the Co Chien River is 1.54 km long, completed with a width of 17.5 m (4 lanes). The project has a total investment capital (including interest) of about VND 2,971 billion.

After being put into use (expected in 2028), the Project will contribute to completing and improving the exploitation capacity of National Highway 57, overcoming traffic congestion at Dinh Khao ferry route, ensuring connection with the national highway and expressway system, shortening travel time between Vinh Long and provinces in the Mekong Delta region, and strengthening regional connectivity between provinces.

Meanwhile, the Co Chien 2 Bridge and Cua Dai Bridge projects under the Mekong Delta Coastal Road Project are undergoing investment procedures according to regulations.

Regarding the Can Tho 2 Bridge Project, on June 18, 2025, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Construction, Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha chaired a meeting on the Pre-Feasibility Study Report of the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge. Regarding the investment scale, the investment plan was agreed upon with a scale of 6 lanes, a design speed of 100 km/h, and a lane width of 3.75 m; prioritizing the plan of not arranging an emergency lane on the main bridge to save investment costs.

Along with bridge projects, Vinh Long also has many traffic projects passing through the province that have been included in the Road Network Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, such as Ho Chi Minh City - Tien Giang - Ben Tre - Tra Vinh - Soc Trang Expressway (CT.33); Hong Ngu - Tra Vinh Expressway (CT.36) and the Coastal Road connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces.

In particular, the Ho Chi Minh City - Tien Giang - Ben Tre - Tra Vinh - Soc Trang Expressway (CT.33) and the Mekong Delta coastal road are the North - South spatial connection axes of the province, facilitating trade activities between Vinh Long province and the Eastern sub-regional hubs and inter-regional urban clusters of the Mekong Delta, connecting with Ho Chi Minh City.

The Hong Ngu - Tra Vinh horizontal expressway (CT.36) is the East - West connection axis of Vinh Long province, connecting the economic and urban centers of the province with the upstream provinces of the Mekong River, border economic zones and Cambodia.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho Railway Project (passing through Vinh Long province) is being prepared by the Ministry of Construction for a pre-feasibility report, with the goal of putting it into operation synchronously with the North - South high-speed railway. This route is about 175 km long, with an investment roadmap before 2030.

With the seamless connection of the expressway system, the eastern coastal road and the synchronous waterway transport system, dynamic axes will be formed, opening up a large economic development space for the province. From there, urban, service and industrial areas will be formed; at the same time, "bottlenecks" in logistics will be removed, increasing the competitiveness of goods and products; increasing the attractiveness of the investment environment and competitiveness so that the province can attract investment better and better.

According to the People's Committee of Vinh Long province, the province is coordinating with the Central Government to accelerate the progress of investment and construction, implementing key projects such as Rach Mieu 2 bridge, Dai Ngai bridge, Dinh Khao bridge, National Highway 57 bypass, upgrading National Highway 53 section Long Ho - Ba Si; upgrading and renovating National Highway 54; National Highway 60; mobilizing central resources to invest in the construction of the coastal corridor route, Co Chien 2 bridge.

At the same time, focus on investing in construction, upgrading, and expanding new and extended provincial and district roads, investing in replacing weak bridges associated with maintenance work to ensure synchronization and smoothness between road traffic and waterways, seaports, industrial parks and clusters, and Dinh An Economic Zone.
