According to Reuters, with a vote of 221-212, the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives approved an investigation into whether President Joe Biden illegally benefited from the foreign business dealings of his 53-year-old son Hunter Biden.
The move came hours after Hunter Biden declined requests to testify behind closed doors before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees.
The White House has dismissed the investigation as factually unfounded and politically motivated, aimed at smearing President Biden as he prepares for a possible rematch with his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump, in the 2024 election.
Any attempt to remove Biden from office would almost certainly fail, observers say. Even if the House voted to impeach the president, the Senate would then have to vote to convict him by a two-thirds majority — an unlikely outcome given Biden’s 51-49 Democratic majority. But it could help Republicans highlight corruption allegations against Biden and the Democratic Party.
