The grandmother and granddaughter are flight attendants who flew together.

Many passengers in the US were shocked to learn that the two flight attendants, Cynthia and Hannah, who were serving them on the flight were grandmother and granddaughter.

Flight attendant Cynthia Heck finished her safety briefing and walked down the cabin, smiling and greeting passengers, checking everything one last time before takeoff. Hannah Heck watched Cynthia with admiration. Then, Hannah announced over the loudspeaker, "See this lovely lady? That's my grandmother. So please treat her well." Passengers laughed. Some applauded. Many looked at Cynthia in disbelief, not expecting her to have such a grown-up granddaughter.

In response to her niece's joke, Cynthia casually added, "Everyone should ask Hannah who did her laundry last night." This response elicited even more amusement from the passengers. The remark also implicitly confirmed the close relationship between the two flight attendants, one older and one younger.

Cynthia, 72, worked as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for nearly 20 years. Hannah, 24, decided to follow in her grandmother's footsteps during her freshman year of college.

Five years ago, 19-year-old Hannah called her grandmother and said she wanted to drop out of school to pursue her dream of becoming a flight attendant. "After graduating from high school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. But I loved traveling and wanted to do what you did," Cynthia said.

Hannah initially worked for a small airline before applying to Southwest, where she currently works. They work on flights departing from Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also moved in with her grandparents for convenience.

Working together as colleagues on a flight for the first time left a lasting impression on both of them. "I looked over and saw her standing there reading announcements over the loudspeaker or helping to serve drinks to passengers," Hannah said. The two of them laughed together throughout their time working together.

Due to her age, Cynthia couldn't fly long-haul flights. But for her granddaughter's first flight, the grandmother swapped shifts with a colleague so she could fly with Hannah as a way to encourage her.

What Hannah remembers most about her grandmother when she was little was that Cynthia flew everywhere. In second grade, Hannah invited her to her school to speak to the class. Her grandmother wore a flight attendant uniform and sang a song. "I was so proud to have her there. My friends all admired my flight attendant grandmother," Hannah said.

Working with her was also a huge advantage. With years of experience, she taught Hannah how to work and handle unexpected situations. "She always taught me about compassion. She has a kind heart," Hannah said about her inspiration.

Since 2022, they have flown together as colleagues several times. Many passengers are surprised when they learn that the two are grandmother and granddaughter. One person even gave them a coffee voucher. Another shared this heartwarming story online, saying that many people can't spend time with their grandparents once they're grown up. Therefore, Cynthia and Hannah's time together evoked mixed emotions in them. Happy to see the two of them spend so much time together. Sad because they themselves couldn't spend as much time with their loved ones.

Currently, the two don't have many flights together because Hannah moved to Texas. But she still visits her grandmother in Las Vegas regularly.

Besides their shared love of travel and flying, the two women also share a passion for sewing and cooking. Hannah learned these skills from her grandmother when she was a child. The two get along well, enjoy chatting, and are always close.

Cynthia said she's planning to retire soon. She still loves her job, but she's getting older. Hannah hopes to fly on her last flight. She also hopes her father, brother, and grandfather will be passengers on that flight.

"She made me feel like everything would always be alright," Hannah said.
