Grandmother and granddaughter are flight attendants on the same flight.

Many passengers were shocked when they learned that the flight attendants Cynthia and Hannah serving them on the flight were grandmother and granddaughter.

Flight attendant Cynthia Heck finished the safety briefing and walked through the cabin, smiling and greeting passengers, checking everything one last time before takeoff. Hannah Heck watched Cynthia with admiration. Then Hannah said over the loudspeaker, "You see this lovely lady. My grandmother. So please treat her better." Passengers laughed. Others applauded. Many looked at Cynthia in disbelief, not knowing she had such an old granddaughter.

Cynthia, 72, has been a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for nearly 20 years. Hannah, 24, decided to follow in her footsteps during her freshman year of college.

Five years ago, 19-year-old Hannah called her grandmother and said she wanted to drop out of school to pursue her dream of becoming a flight attendant. "I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after high school. But I loved to travel and I wanted to do what my grandmother did," Cynthia said.

Hannah first worked for a small airline and then applied to Southwest, where she now works. They work on flights departing from Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also moved in with her grandparents to make it easier for her job.

Working together as colleagues on a flight for the first time was a memorable experience for both of them. "I would look over at my grandmother and see her reading announcements over the loudspeaker or serving drinks to passengers," Hannah said. The two of them laughed all the time while working together.

Because of her age, Cynthia doesn't fly long-haul flights. But on her granddaughter's first flight, her grandmother swapped shifts with a co-worker to fly with Hannah as a way to encourage her.

As a child, what Hannah remembers most about her grandmother is that Cynthia flew everywhere. In second grade, Hannah invited her grandmother to her school to speak to the class. She wore a flight attendant uniform and sang a song. "I was so proud to have her there. My friends all looked up to my flight attendant grandmother," Hannah said.

Working with her was also a big advantage. With many years of experience, she taught Hannah how to work and handle situations that arose. "She always taught me about kindness. She has a kind heart," Hannah said about the person who inspired her.

Since 2022, they have flown together as colleagues several times. Many passengers are surprised to learn that they are grandmother and granddaughter. One person once gave them a coffee voucher. Another person shared this interesting story online, saying that many people cannot spend time with their grandparents when they are adults. Therefore, seeing Cynthia and Hannah together has brought them mixed emotions. Happy to see the two grandmothers and granddaughters being able to spend more time together. Sad because they themselves cannot spend as much time with their loved ones.

The two don't fly together much these days because Hannah moved to Texas. But she still visits her grandmother in Las Vegas regularly.

In addition to their love of traveling and flying, the two women also share a passion for sewing and cooking, skills Hannah learned from her grandmother when she was young. They get along well, enjoy talking, and are always close.

Cynthia said she was planning to retire soon. She still loved her job, but she was getting older. Hannah was looking forward to flying on her last work trip. She also hoped her father, brother, and grandfather would be passengers on the flight.

"She made me feel like everything was going to be okay," Hannah said.
