According to the Hai Phong Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hai Phong has a dense network of rivers and canals, the highest density of rivers in Northern Vietnam, with more than 50 large and small rivers, including 16 main rivers, the most famous of which are the Bach Dang River, the Cam River, the Lach Tray River, the Van Uc River, and the Thai Binh River. Therefore, Hai Phong is known as the city of rivers and the city of bridges. These rivers not only carry many cultural and historical values but also play an important role in the socio -economic development of the city.

The rivers of Hai Phong have long been "witnesses" to history. Since ancient times, General Le Chan chose the fertile alluvial land along the banks of the Cam River to reclaim and establish the An Bien settlement, the predecessor of present-day Hai Phong City.

The Bạch Đằng River is one of the most legendary, sacred, and heroic rivers in Vietnam, associated with three glorious battles.

The Cấm River symbolizes the harmonious blend of the city's past, present, and bright future.

The three river landscape corridors – the Cam River, the Lach Tray River, and the Van Uc River – will serve as economic and service development corridors, and also as key areas for the development of river tourism in Hai Phong.

Giám đốc Sở Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch TP Hải Phòng phát biểu tại Hội thảo.
The Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hai Phong City delivered a speech at the workshop.

At the workshop, delegates explained that the main reason hindering the development of river tourism in Hai Phong is the poor waterway infrastructure. Hai Phong's ports and wharves are general cargo ports, lacking international marinas and tourist ports; many destinations do not have wharves. Some waterways have not been regularly dredged, leading to sedimentation and affecting the navigation of tourist vessels.

Furthermore, Hai Phong lacks a comprehensive strategy, plan, and development plan for river tourism. The river landscape, suitable for tourism development, has not received adequate investment. Cultural, historical, religious, community, ecological, and recreational experiences along the riverbanks have not been fully developed.

Based on an assessment of potential and current conditions, experts have outlined a strategic direction for developing waterway tourism in Hai Phong: A comprehensive plan for waterway tourism development should be developed soon, identifying key routes, stopping points, check-in locations, and visitor centers. Simultaneously, infrastructure should be upgraded, from dredging waterways and constructing wharves and piers to developing accompanying services such as restaurants, hotels, experiential areas, and artistic riverside lighting.

On the other hand, Hai Phong needs to focus on products that exploit the cultural and historical depth associated with its rivers; develop river and sea tours connecting the city center with Cat Ba; and design tourist boats in a unique style that reflects the identity of the port city. Each river should be a "vibrant tourism product," telling its own story, linked to diverse landscapes and experiences.

Developing inter-provincial river tourism tours will enhance the tourist experience and contribute to the sustainable economic development of the region. Furthermore, it is necessary to promote the image of Hai Phong's river tourism through digital platforms, organize riverside cultural festivals, and strengthen public-private partnerships to attract investment from large corporations, creating momentum for breakthrough development in the tourism industry…
