On June 6, the Customs Department announced that it had successfully cracked down on two major cases related to cigarette smuggling and illegal drug transportation.
Specifically, implementing the direction from the Government and the Ministry of Finance on strengthening control and preventing smuggling, Ho Chi Minh City Customs forces have simultaneously launched a campaign to suppress crimes on key routes and areas.
On June 5 and 6, the Southern Anti-Smuggling Control Team (Team 3) and the Drug Control Team No. 3 (Team 7) - Anti-Smuggling Investigation Department under the Customs Department coordinated with relevant units to inspect the export shipment to Canada of VHP Company. During the working process, the authorities discovered more than 84,000 packs of Marlboro brand cigarettes of unknown origin, with an estimated value of more than 2.5 billion VND.

It is worth mentioning that these smuggled cigarettes were hidden very cleverly in two empty steel tanks, welded shut with only a small hole, making it difficult to detect. To check, the Customs agency had to use a welding machine to cut and destroy the entire steel tank. A representative of Ho Chi Minh City Customs said that this camouflage method was quite new. The subjects used popular, low-value export goods to mislead the authorities. Previously, the route of smuggling cigarettes from Vietnam to Canada was also rarely used by the subjects.
Also within the framework of the drug prevention action month, on June 5, at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Drug Control Team No. 3 in coordination with the airport customs discovered passenger Bong Suk Shya (Malaysian nationality) with signs of suspected drug transportation.
