Vietnam Customs to host WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition in 2023

On September 28 in Hanoi , the General Department of Customs held a press conference to inform about Vietnam Customs hosting the WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition in 2023.

At the press conference, the General Department of Customs said that this is the largest annual international conference of the WCO with the theme "Welcoming the digital age: Applying technology, promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of professional customs officers".

Through exhibition booths and discussion sessions, exchanging experiences at the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to learn, approach, and update development trends in the field of technology, customs management solutions supported by technology in a vivid and direct way. Thereby, supporting and facilitating customs agencies in finding solutions to apply modern technology to enhance the effectiveness of management of import and export goods, contributing to improving the capacity and modernization of customs agencies.

This is an opportunity for Vietnam to demonstrate its determination to digitally transform and apply modern technology towards e-Government and digital Government as the Government's spirit in the Prime Minister 's decisions (Decision No. 749/QD-TTg dated June 3, 2020 approving the National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030; Decision No. 942/QD-TTg dated June 15, 2021 approving the Strategy for e-Government Development towards digital Government for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030).

In such a context, hosting a global conference on the application of emerging technologies, focusing on digital transformation, data analysis, artificial intelligence, blockchain, machine learning, internet of things, etc., is timely and consistent with Vietnam's priorities in "technology diplomacy " to learn from international experience and gain support from international organizations.

In particular, the Conference is also an opportunity to introduce and promote to international friends around the world the cultural traditions, history, scenic spots, and tourist attractions of Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general. The General Department of Customs has discussed with the WCO to arrange a booth to introduce the cultural traditions, scenic spots, and tourist attractions of Hanoi and Vietnam, coordinated by the Hanoi Department of Tourism.

For Vietnam Customs, this is an annual global event of WCO. As an active member of the multilateral organization, Vietnam Customs hosting the event will affirm the pioneering role and responsibility of Vietnam Customs within the framework of WCO. This is also the first time Vietnam Customs has hosted a large-scale global event of WCO with the participation of WCO Leaders and Leaders of General Departments of Customs of countries, as well as leading enterprises in the technology sector attending the exhibition.

According to the representative of the General Department of Customs, October 10th of every year has been chosen by the Prime Minister as the National Digital Transformation Day (from 2022). Therefore, the General Department of Customs has chosen October 10th, 2023 as the opening day of the conference. The chair is Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the WCO, with the guest of honor being Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The event will have two parts including a conference and an exhibition. The conference is divided into 10 plenary sessions and 3 thematic workshops on technology strategies and applications to address global trade challenges; building an adaptive, disaster-resilient customs system and ensuring the continuity of customs operations in the digital age; artificial intelligence supporting customs authorities in exploiting big data to improve the efficiency of risk management and trade facilitation; blockchain technology supporting customs operations; new technologies in cargo screening to improve the efficiency of customs control; technology supporting trade facilitation in the digital age; green customs for a sustainable future; promoting customs operations with drones and robots...

The thematic discussion sessions focus on the following topics: Application of technology in training, green customs, smart customs control solutions, gender equality, data protection, data exchange.

The speakers invited to attend the conference are leaders and experts of international organizations related to the customs sector; leaders and experts of WCO member customs agencies, especially customs agencies of developed countries such as the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan; leaders and experts of multinational companies operating in the field of technology solutions in customs management activities such as: S2 Global, Leidos, Webb Fontaine; Microsoft, Ultra Global, Crimson Logic PTE Ltd., GUUD International Pte Ltd; GTS...

The representative of the organizing committee said that Vietnam Customs will have presentations and coordination sessions at the conference. Specifically, General Director of the General Department of Vietnam Customs Nguyen Van Can will participate as a guest at the first plenary session of the conference in the form of a discussion on the topic "Strategy behind technology: Applying technology to solve global challenges". The discussion session will also be attended by high-ranking delegates from international organizations including the Secretary General of the WCO, the Chairman of the WCO Council, and a senior expert on trade facilitation from the World Bank.

At the seminar, the Director General of the General Department of Customs will discuss specific issues such as: The role of technology in sharing knowledge and making the customs profession attractive to the younger generation; key factors to consider when using technology and areas where there are still certain gaps; data management in customs and international trade and how to build an operational model to collect and exploit data from the entire trade ecosystem with the help of technology...

The conference has about 50 exhibition booths of sponsoring enterprises and technology enterprises worldwide. The exhibition booths will introduce new technologies of enterprises related to the customs sector, including technology solutions and support for customs operations; promoting tax collection; improving the quality of customs services; digital transformation; solutions on security, anti-smuggling and trade fraud, application of artificial intelligence in modernization and trade development; blockchain solutions in transportation, production, finance, trade, energy, services; risk management, enhancing compliance.../.
