On August 29, South Korean Minister of Science, ICT and Information Technology Bae Kyung-hoon affirmed that the government will make efforts to support technology businesses to accelerate investment in developing data center infrastructure, realizing the goal of making South Korea a world leader in artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking during a visit to Kakao Group's data center in Ansan city, southwest of Seoul, Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the Ministry will prioritize allocating appropriate budgets, creating conditions for technology businesses to boost investment in developing computing infrastructure for AI.

He emphasized that the Korean government will proactively improve the legal basis and remove barriers to speed up the construction of data centers serving AI.

During the visit, the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Technology signed a memorandum of understanding with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), Kakao Corporation and major Korean cloud service providers NHN Cloud and Naver Cloud on cooperation to enhance computing infrastructure for AI.

Previously, the Korean government announced plans to purchase more than 35,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) over the next two years, aiming to own a total of 50,000 GPUs by 2030 under the “AI Highway” initiative, thereby realizing its ambition to become one of the three leading countries in the world in AI.
