Korean and Vietnamese officials, along with approximately 800 local residents, attended the unveiling ceremony of a statue of King Ly Thai To and the topping-out ceremony of a multicultural community center in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province on August 25th.
The ceremony for the installation of the statue of King Ly Thai To took place in Bonghwa commune on August 25th. |
Park Hyun-kuk, chairman of Bonghwa County, said that this area is the ancestral home of the Ly Dynasty royal family when they first arrived in Goryeo. King Ly Thai To is considered the progenitor of the Ly Dynasty royal descendants in Bonghwa.
South Korean officials are also building a Vietnamese village in Bonghwa, around the Trung Hieu Duong historical site, a descendant of the Ly Dynasty of Vietnam, with an investment of $146 million on a plot of land nearly 4 hectares in size.
In the 12th century, when the Ly Dynasty was in decline, Prince Ly Long Tuong, the seventh son of King Ly Anh Tong, fled to Goryeo (Korea) and was treated hospitably by King Gojong of that country.
Lee Long-seong later distinguished himself in fighting against the Mongol invaders and was appointed General of Hwa-san, a high title in the Goryeo dynasty. The King of Goryeo also granted the prince land in Hwa-san, now part of Korea, thus establishing the Lee Hwa-san clan, which has produced many descendants with high positions in history.
Currently, Chung Hyo-dong in Bonghwa is the only remaining relic of the Lee clan in Korea, including a memorial stele dedicated to Prince Lee Long-seong.
