(CLO) The South Korean government announced that the AI app DeepSeek will be temporarily removed from domestic app stores pending review.

This decision comes amid concerns expressed by many countries about how the app collects and uses sensitive data.

On Monday, South Korea confirmed that DeepSeek, an app developed by ChineseAI, will no longer be available on its app stores pending a review of its user data handling practices.

Choi Jang-hyuk, Vice Chairman of Seoul's Personal Data Protection Commission, said the government will carefully review DeepSeek's handling of personal data to ensure compliance with local laws.

South Korea's data protection agency said DeepSeek is cooperating with authorities and has "acknowledged that considerations regarding domestic privacy laws are lacking." The review process will take time, therefore, the app has been temporarily suspended in South Korea.

DeepSeek was removed from local app stores on Saturday and taken down from the Apple Store in South Korea on Monday. However, users who had previously downloaded it can still continue to use the app. Authorities warned users to exercise caution when continuing to use the app until it meets local legal requirements.

DeepSeek, a Chinese company, has recently gained attention for its ability to combine the functionalities of Western AI chatbots like ChatGPT at a significantly lower cost. However, some countries are concerned about the app collecting and storing users' personal data.

According to DeepSeek, user data is stored on secure servers located in China.

Previously, the South Korean government banned access to DeepSeek on devices belonging to government ministries and police forces. Australia also issued a ban on the app on all government devices for data security reasons.

Meanwhile, China rejects accusations that it is using technology companies to collect personal data, while condemning the " politicization of economic, trade, and technology issues."
