Data released by global market researcher Clarkson Research Service on December 31 showed that South Korean shipbuilders secured a total of 10.01 million compensated gross tons (CGT) in 2023, accounting for 24% of the global total of 41.49 million CGT. Leading the order book were Chinese shipyards with 24.46 million CGT in new orders, equivalent to 59% of the global total.

However, South Korean shipbuilders are outpacing their Chinese rivals in the number of orders for high-end liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers this year.

South Korean shipbuilders won 4.41 million CGTs of new LNG carrier orders, accounting for 80 percent of the global total of 5.54 million CGTs. Chinese shipyards accounted for the remaining 20 percent, or 1.13 million CGTs.
