On May 3, Yonhap quoted lawmaker Jeon Yong-gi of the opposition Democratic Party of Korea as saying that Japan's objection to his recent visit to the Dokdo Islands (which Tokyo also claims and calls Takeshima) was a "violation of sovereignty and interference in Seoul's internal affairs."
According to Kyodo News, on May 2, the South Korean Foreign Ministry voiced its opposition to the visit of congressman Jeon Yong-gi to the disputed Dokdo/Takeshima islands that took place on the same day. On May 3, a senior official of the South Korean Foreign Ministry emphasized that the government "rejects the untrue statement from Japan through diplomatic channels". According to Yonhap, sovereignty over the disputed Dokdo/Takeshima islands has been one of the major obstacles in the relationship between South Korea and Japan.
The latest controversy comes as Seoul-Tokyo relations have recently shown signs of improvement under South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, who will visit South Korea this weekend.
