Nguyen Ninh green rice cake facility, famous for its traditional green rice cake products, was discovered to have many serious violations in food hygiene and safety.
According to the inspection team, the production area of this facility is located in the family kitchen, without a clear division between the food processing area and the living area. This makes the production area unhygienic, the floor is peeling, moldy, and there are open sewers, stagnant garbage.
In particular, the inspection team also discovered that laundry was being hung out to dry right in the production area, processing equipment was dirty due to lack of regular cleaning, and most worryingly, the toilet was located right in the food preparation area. These factors contributed to creating an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and food poisoning agents.
Furthermore, the bags containing the dry rice ingredients were stacked right at the entrance to the kitchen, near the moldy wall, which created a risk of microbial contamination of the food. The inspection of legal documents also found that the facility had not fully presented health certificates and food safety certificates for the owner and employees. In addition, the origin of the ingredients, food additives, and packaging in contact with food was also not clearly demonstrated.
Faced with such serious violations, the interdisciplinary inspection team requested the facility to temporarily suspend operations to immediately correct the violations and ensure food safety conditions. At the same time, the Ba Dinh District Food Safety Steering Committee will continue to work with this facility to handle violations according to regulations and report the results to the inspection team before January 10, 2025.
In addition, the inspection team took samples of the cakes to test for quality standards to ensure there was no risk of harm to consumers' health.
This is just one of the inspections in the campaign to ensure food safety during the 2025 Lunar New Year in Hanoi.
As planned, the authorities have established four interdisciplinary inspection teams to inspect food production, processing, and trading establishments, especially items consumed in large quantities during Tet such as meat, beer, cakes, jams, candies, vegetables, fruits, alcoholic beverages, and products serving festivals.
The main goal of this campaign is to protect public health, prevent food poisoning, and control the quality of food consumed during Tet.
The inspection teams will focus on establishments with high food safety risks, as well as food production establishments in wholesale markets and supermarkets.
According to Ms. Tran Viet Nga, Director of the Department of Food Safety, Ministry of Health, checking and handling food safety violations is an important part of the strategy to protect public health, especially during the Lunar New Year when food consumption demand increases.
"We recommend that food production and trading establishments strictly comply with food hygiene and safety regulations, from production to distribution, to avoid endangering consumers," said Ms. Nga.
In addition, in this campaign, the Food Safety Steering Committee also calls for the active participation of the community and social organizations to detect and handle violations, protect people's health and improve food quality in the market.
Incidents like the Nguyen Ninh green rice cake facility are a reminder of the importance of ensuring food hygiene and safety, especially in the context of increased food consumption during the Lunar New Year.
Consumers need to raise awareness of choosing safe food, while food production, processing and trading establishments need to comply with food safety regulations to protect public health.
In order to avoid unfortunate food poisoning incidents, authorities continue to carry out inspections and monitoring, especially during festivals, to ensure that food reaching consumers is always of the best quality.
