The Nhuong Ban fishing festival (Cam Nhuong commune, Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh ) expresses the wish to pray to the god of the sea to protect the people, keep the sky and sea calm, and catch lots of seafood.
On the morning of May 26 (April 8 of the lunar calendar), at the temple of Duc Ngu Ong, the People's Committee of Cam Nhuong commune (Cam Xuyen) solemnly held the Nhuong Ban fishing festival. Leaders of Cam Xuyen district and many local people attended the festival. |

The Nhuong Ban Fishing Festival has a long history and is held annually on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month at the Duc Ngu Ong Temple (in Phuc Hai village, Cam Nhuong commune).
According to the content recorded on the royal decrees kept at the temple, the Nhuong Ban fishing festival has existed since the Nguyen Dynasty, hundreds of years ago. Currently, at the Duc Ngu Ong temple, there are still 3 royal decrees from the Nguyen Dynasty assigned to Nhuong Ban commune to worship the god Nam Hai Nhan Ngu.
The festival is solemnly organized with main parts such as: Nam Hai Dai Than worshiping ceremony; Nam Hai Dai Than welcoming ceremony; rowing festival, sea procession and releasing boats to the sea...
The rituals are all to show gratitude to the Nam Hai god - the god of the sea who has blessed and protected fishermen with peace, calm seas, favorable weather, and a good catch of seafood; and encouraged fishermen to go out to sea.
Fisherman's Procession to the Sea
Boat after boat takes the Fisherman out to sea
The Nhuong Ban fishing festival originates from the needs of community life, reflecting the aspirations of local people. Through the practice of the festival, people gain a deeper understanding of national culture, expressing their desire for prosperity and religious beliefs. The festival also demonstrates the strength of the community, strengthening solidarity in production and combat.
The festival ends with the Fisherman releasing his boat back into the vast ocean.
With its historical, cultural and spiritual values, in 2013, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province ranked Duc Ngu Ong Temple as a provincial historical and cultural relic. Notably, on May 27, 2021, the Nhuong Ban fishing festival was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. These are the legal bases for generations to continue to preserve, promote the value and maintain the Nhuong Ban fishing festival forever. |
