A journey of enduring creativity.

Taking place amidst the ancient setting of the Temple of Literature - National University, the exhibition "The Art of Vietnamese Ao Dai" (running from May 26th to June 2nd) is more than just a fashion show. The event also presents unique stories, contributing to the overall picture of designers' persistent journey in taking the ao dai beyond the confines of a "heritage to admire," transforming it into a vibrant garment in contemporary life and a symbol of Vietnamese culture on the international stage.

At the "Traditional Artistic Styles of Vietnamese Clothing" exhibition, it's evident that designers aren't simply repeating the past, but rather engaging in dialogue with tradition using contemporary language. Designer Cao Minh Tien incorporates Dong Ho folk paintings onto the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress), while designer Ngoc Han draws inspiration from the patterns on the doctoral steles at the Temple of Literature. These folk colors and imagery are treated with a fresh visual perspective, making the ao dai more accessible to younger audiences while retaining its Vietnamese essence. This is a noteworthy direction: the ao dai is not only beautiful in form but can also carry the depth of culture, knowledge, and national memory.

At the exhibition, the designers also shared stories about their enduring journey of bringing the Vietnamese ao dai to many countries, appearing in festivals, art programs, and international cultural exchange activities. These "journeys" of the ao dai, as Cao Minh Tien shared, are a journey of promoting the image of Vietnam in a gentle yet effective way. In the context of the increasingly valued cultural industry, the ao dai is becoming a special "ambassador" of Vietnamese identity.

This contribution is even more meaningful when continued by the younger generation. Fashion students participating in the exhibition showed that the ao dai is not outdated at all. For them, the ao dai can be modernized in terms of form, material, and function while still retaining its traditional spirit. It is this continuity between generations of creativity that helps the ao dai maintain its enduring vitality in modern society.

"The Art of Vietnamese Ao Dai" is therefore more than just an exhibition. It is also an affirmation that the Vietnamese ao dai is continuing its journey – a journey from tradition to modernity, from national identity to a global cultural language – through enduring and admirable creative stories.
