Journey to change teaching and learning methods

In the article “The Future for the Rising Generation”, General Secretary To Lam also set out a strategic vision, building a generation of young Vietnamese with courage, intelligence, and global integration while still maintaining national identity. That call has strongly inspired and urged teachers to innovate teaching and learning methods.

In recent years, the liberaleducation model has been chosen by many general education institutions such as Olympia Primary and Secondary School, Nguyen Sieu Primary, Secondary and High School, Chu Van An High School (Hanoi)...

The goal of this model is to create maximum conditions for students to express their talents and career inclinations, investing heavily in facilities and teaching programs so that they can develop comprehensively in the direction of truth, goodness and beauty.

Tri Duc High School ( Hanoi ) has built a unique "3 in 1" boarding education model: a classy school, a small civilized society, and a warm extended family.

Mr. Ha Trung Hung, former lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education, who laid the foundation for this model, said: “Education does not only impart knowledge but also aims at developing intelligence, morality, and willpower.” The idea of “Becoming a person before becoming a talent” has become a guiding principle for teachers to innovate methods, helping students practice self-study, critical thinking, and life skills.

Ms. Tran Thi Hai Yen, Vice Principal and Biology teacher at Tri Duc High School, shared: “I not only impart knowledge, but also become a guide, helping students discover and mature their personalities.” With the discussion class model, she spent a whole month just guiding students on how to study lessons effectively, ask questions and take notes in their self-study notebooks. After 6 months, 85% of her students had significantly improved their self-study skills, communication skills and clearer career orientation.

Nguyen Thuy Linh, a 10th grade student, said: “Thanks to the discussion class model, I not only became more confident but also learned how to manage my emotions, something I used to have a hard time controlling.”

The journey of liberation for teachers is not easy. Ms. Yen said that to implement the Discussion Class model, teachers must carefully prepare each lesson, from asking leading questions to analyzing teaching techniques. They even have to play the role of "students" to think and research the lesson in advance, ensuring that they lead students in the right direction. And thanks to that, teachers themselves become more mature and creative in their roles. They are no longer mere transmitters, but become "designers" of learning experiences, accompanying students on their journey of comprehensive development.

Liberal education is an educational philosophy that aims to train well-rounded people who are adaptable to change and lifelong learners. This is not only an innovative direction, but also a long-term strategy. However, for this journey to be successful, it requires synchronization from policy, society and educators themselves.

Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quy Thanh, Principal of the University of Education (Hanoi National University) commented: "Liberal education is effective for students with a good foundation, but students who do not have the habit of self-study need a longer time to adapt."

Professor, Dr. Furuta Motoo, President of Vietnam Japan University added: “Implementing liberal education in Vietnam is not simple, but it can be done by adjusting the model to suit reality.”

Internationally, successful liberal education models in Finland, Singapore, and India show the need to invest heavily in teacher training and adapt the model to local contexts.

The journey of liberating education, as the story at some schools has tried to implement, shows that it not only changes the students but also changes the teachers themselves. Ms. Tran Thi Hai Yen shared: "Witnessing the students grow up, I realized that I have liberated myself."
