At the workshop "Poetry & Music, Compatible or Incompatible?" organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association and the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association on the morning of February 23 on the occasion of Vietnam Poetry Day 2024, musician Pham Minh Tuan shared many interesting things about the circumstances of the birth of his famous songs based on poetry.
"Every time I listen to the song Khat Vong (based on Dang Viet Loi's poem), I am very moved, but if I meet a singer who sings the wrong lyrics: Live like a river and change it to... life, just adding a sharp accent will ruin the work and not match the author's intention," musician Pham Minh Tuan confided.
President of Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association Trinh Bich Ngan at the workshop
According to the President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, Trinh Bich Ngan: "From the first song set to poetry that was publicly introduced, the song Dawn, composed by musician Nguyen Xuan Khoat to The Lu's poem (the poem was published in the newspaper Ngay Nay on July 31, 1938) until now, it is difficult to fully count how many songs have been set to poetry. After the pre-war musicians such as Dang The Phong, Hoang Quy, Le Thuong, Van Cao, Doan Man..., most of the talented musicians admired by the public have songs set to poetry. There are even musicians whose songs set to poetry made their careers such as Hoang Hiep, Phan Huynh Dieu, Thuan Yen, Phu Quang... Clearly, many poems have become a launching pad for songs to soar into the hearts of the public. Therefore, it can be said that poets have played a significant, if not important, role in the richness and spread of musical composition activities up to now".
"Singer Ta Minh Tam also sang this word wrong yesterday..."
It can be said that in the Vietnamese music industry, musician Pham Minh Tuan is a famous name. He has many works that leave a deep impression on the audience such as: Unforgettable Song, Country, Spring, Desire ... including the work City of Love and Nostalgia (poem by Nguyen Nhat Anh) is one of the songs that is very loved by the people of Ho Chi Minh City and has become the "brand" of many art programs both on stage and on television.
Revealing the connection that led to the creation of the song "Country" (poem by Ta Huu Yen), musician Pham Minh Tuan said: "A life of literature and art and having good compositions about Uncle Ho and the country is the dream of many people, including me. In the past, there were many people who wrote very successfully and because I was "born late", I really wished for it. Fortunately, in 1984, I found the very good poem "My Country" by Ta Huu Yen. The simple, lyrical lyrics, reflecting the length of more than 4,000 years of the country, matched my thoughts, so through the suggestion of musician Huy Thuc, I immediately started working on it."
Musician Pham Minh Tuan has many works that leave a deep impression on the audience such as: Unforgettable Song, Country, Spring, Aspiration ...
The song " Front Footprints" is based on a rather long poem by poet Ho Thi Ca. He said: "I struggled to find a way to write it in a way that would allow me to extract as many words as I could. Luckily, it was finally finished and over the past 40 years, this song has affirmed its place in the hearts of the audience."
Coming to the song "Aspiration" (based on Dang Viet Loi's poem), the musician wanted to exploit the simplicity and classicism. Unfortunately, nowadays, there are some singers who sing the wrong lyrics: " Live like a river/To know how to love your roots/Live like a mountain/Reach for the heights ". What I mean is: Live like a river with its roots, love the river, love the stream. If the singer adds just one more sharp accent, it will be contrary to the author's intention. Above is the river life, then below is the mountain life. Just yesterday, when meeting with artists of the Spring of Giap Thin 2024 (morning of February 22) in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Ta Minh Tam sang very well, I was very moved but he made a mistake, the word "river life" became... " life ", so it was not according to the author's intention", musician Pham Minh Tuan regretted.
