RT reported that Russian President Putin's assistant, Mr. Yury Ushakov, confirmed that the two Russian and US leaders had a 40-minute phone call on August 18, the same day as President Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders at the White House.
Mr. Yury Ushakov said that President Putin and President Trump both expressed their readiness to discuss with leader Zelensky about the solution to the Ukrainian conflict.

"The phone call focused on the next steps in peace efforts. The two leaders expressed support for continuing direct negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations and discussed the idea of inviting higher-level representatives to participate," News Week quoted Mr. Ushakov.
On August 18, President Trump held talks with Mr. Zelensky at the White House just days after the US-Russia summit in Alaska. Earlier that day, Mr. Trump said he planned to hold a bilateral meeting between the two Russian and Ukrainian leaders as part of the US effort to end the nearly four-year conflict.
During talks with President Zelensky and the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy and Finland, along with the President of the European Commission and the Secretary General of NATO on August 18, President Trump said he would support European security guarantees for Ukraine.
However, he did not commit to deploying US troops, instead proposing a “NATO-style” security guarantee, with details to be discussed in detail with EU leaders.
