The sword is estimated to date from the 10th century AD, when the Umayyad Dynasty controlled the Iberian Peninsula. Photo: @Valencia Municipality Archaeological Council.
Made of iron, the sword is short, with a blade about 45 cm long. The hilt is said to be decorated with bronze plates and notches for easy gripping. The tip is slightly curved, which initially caused confusion about the date, as Visigothic swords were similar in shape. It is also possible that the design of this sword may reflect an evolution of earlier Visigothic sword models. Photo: @Valencia Municipality Archaeological Council. The weapon's small size and lack of hand guard suggest it was used by an Andalusian knight. Photo: @Valencia Municipality Archaeological Council. It is worth mentioning that it was named 'Excalibur' because its appearance evokes a resemblance to the legendary sword of King Arthur, said archaeologist José Miguel Osuna, who led the research project on "Excalibur". In the legend of King Arthur, Excalibur is a sword that was magically embedded in a rock, until Arthur pulled it out, winning the right to the throne of England.
