With a production budget of up to 274 million USD, while the box office revenue was only 206 million USD, The Marvels shocked Disney when the company suffered heavy losses.

The poor box office performance of The Marvels forced Disney to rethink everything. It's clear that audiences are less receptive to superhero movies. Disney has postponed production on four MCU sequels: Deadpool 3 , Captain America: A Brave New World , Thunderbolts , and Blade , giving the studio more time to rethink its production strategy. For future superhero movies, Disney CEO Bob Iger has promised a return to quality over quantity.
Meanwhile, the financial failure of Madame Web is wiping out plans for a new series, as Sony becomes the latest superhero studio in need of a turnaround.
Last week, critics gave Sony's Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score (13%) of any superhero movie in nearly a decade. Its CinemaScore was also abysmal (C+) - extremely low for a superhero movie.
Madame Web marked one of the lowest starts in Hollywood history for a film based on a Marvel character. The film's six-day box office in North America was just $26.2 million after opening midweek on Valentine's Day. Internationally, the film grossed $25.7 million. To date, Madame Web has grossed $77 million against a production budget of $80 million!
Sony's previous Spider-Man movie, Morbius , hit theaters in 2022 and was a flop, heavily panned by fans online, but it still made $170 million worldwide (against a production budget of $80 million).

There's no such hope for Madame Web . Plus, the film's demise not only affects Sony, but also the new superhero franchise that Sony has pinned its hopes on starring Dakota Johnson.
Madame Web introduced a trio of supporting characters (played by Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, and Sydney Sweeney) who are now top teen stars. Sony set up a future where the three could have become a team of "Spider-Women" under the guidance of Cassie Webb, played by Dakota Johnson. Now that can't happen.
Madame Web joins a worrying trend of... decline in the superhero genre. Every live-action comic book adaptation last year underperformed (with the exception of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ), leading to the slogan "superhero fatigue" among some members of the fanbase...
