No regrets about land, just afraid of children being illiterate
In September 2019, students and teachers of Nam Sai Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (PTTHBT THCS) entered the new school year with much joy. Many parents who brought their children to class also took the opportunity to stop by and admire the classrooms that had just been completed not long ago. Last school year, students had to study in old, dilapidated and extremely cramped classrooms. Every time it rained, teachers and students had to study while avoiding leaks, and some days parents did not dare to send their children to school. Therefore, looking at the spacious classrooms today, everyone is even more grateful for the kindness of the households in Ban Sai village, Lien Minh commune (Sa Pa, Lao Cai ) who donated land to build the school.
After decades of living in the highlands, Mr. Ma A Hu understands that the greatest value of the land his family owns is not money, but the children being able to study in a spacious school. “How much longer do I have to live? Donating land to build a school to sow seeds for the future is a very good thing to do,” Mr. Hu confided.
Having said that, Mr. Hu discussed with 7 households with land adjacent to his house to donate land so that the commune could build a spacious school with solid classrooms for their children. If their children had a stable place to study and knew how to read and write, their lives would be better. Mr. Hu took the lead in donating more than 2,000m2 of his family's land, and the surrounding households also donated together: Mr. Ma A Doan's family donated 2,000m2, Mrs. Hien's family donated 1,000m2...
On an area of nearly 12,000m2 that Mr. Hu and 7 households in Ban Sai village, Nam Sai commune donated, Nam Sai Secondary School was built with 10 classrooms, 4 functional rooms, 8 boarding rooms, 4 teachers' rooms, playground, sports field and vegetable growing area with a total cost of 11 billion VND, bringing boundless joy to teachers, students and people here.
Although the life of Mr. Hu’s family and other households is still difficult and hard, seeing children studying and playing in a spacious school on the land he donated makes him satisfied. In the era of “every land is gold”, the hearts of people like Mr. Doan, Mr. Hu… are truly precious.
Mr. Ha Ngoc Quyet, Principal of Nam Sai Secondary School, shared that in the past, when the school was temporary, parents were reluctant to send their children to school, and the quality of education was limited. When 8 households donated land for the newly built school, the students were eager to go to school, and the quality of education was significantly improved. Parents were excited and felt secure sending their children to school.
Sowing the seeds of the future
After 4 years in power Nam Sai Secondary School has been built and hundreds of students have studied, played and grown up from this school. Chao Thi Linh, a 9th grade student at Nam Sai Secondary School, shared that she is the first group of students to study at this new, spacious school. “The new school makes us attached and always want to grow up. In the past, when we were at the old school, every time it rained, we had to miss school because the school was leaky and cramped. Now, we don’t have to worry about rain or wind anymore, we can study with peace of mind. I dream of becoming a teacher and returning to this school to continue teaching.”
Confiding in me during recess, Tan May Phay, a 6th grade student at Nam Sai Secondary School, confided that his parents also intended for him to study until the end of primary school and then stay home to work. His house is far from school, and in the past the school was too cramped and there was no place for boarding students to stay. When they saw that the school was built spaciously and had accommodation, his parents let him continue studying. "I will study really hard so that in the future my dream of becoming a doctor will come true."
Recalling the hardships of his old school, Mr. Dao Van Khiem, a teacher who has worked at Nam Sai Secondary School for 11 years, shared, “I was assigned to teach here right after graduating. When I started working at Nam Sai Secondary School, it was still very difficult. Primary and secondary school students studied in the same school, so there were not enough classrooms for them to study, let alone having specialized classrooms for subjects such as IT and English like now. Teachers did not have official housing... After Mr. Hu, Mr. Doan and local households donated land to build the school, students had spacious classrooms, teachers had official housing, and students also had a place to stay to study in peace.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Chinh, Head of the Education Department of Sa Pa town, shared that when I mobilized households to donate land to build a school in 2015-2016, I was the Secretary of Nam Sai commune. Along with the good work of the local government in mass mobilization, the 8 households themselves also had a high awareness of promoting the responsibility of the people in joining hands to build their homeland. The work of the 8 households had a strong influence, contributing to helping the commune complete the criteria for schools in building new rural areas.
"The local government as well as the education sector of Sa Pa highly appreciate the acts of households like Mr. Hu and Mr. Doan for being pioneers, exemplary, and "bridges" between the Party's will and the people's hearts. The commune has organized to commend and reward the households, reported and broadcast on the radio system so that the people of the whole commune know and follow their example." As for the education sector, we are extremely grateful to them, they not only donated land but they have been sowing "green shoots" for their homeland and for the country.
