Today (January 9th), the University of Transport and Communications, in collaboration with Southwest Jiaotong University (China), organized an international conference on: "Building High-Speed Railways in Vietnam and the Experience of China".

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hung - Rector of the University of Transport and Communications, stated that the workshop brought together reputable scientists and experts in the field of railways from Southwest Jiaotong University - a leading high-speed rail university in China, the University of Transport and Communications, and scientists and alumni of the University currently working in the high-speed rail sector from Europe.

The workshop attracted experts from both within and outside the country to share their experiences and suggestions for building high-speed railways.

"The goal of the workshop is to summarize the successful lessons of China's high-speed rail system, thereby suggesting optimal technical solutions to be applied to the North-South high-speed rail project, a key national project of Vietnam in the current period," emphasized the Rector of the University of Transport.

At the workshop, core technical and technological issues of high-speed rail such as: experience in building high-speed rail standards systems in China; technical solutions in high-speed rail track foundation treatment in China and Europe; issues of selecting railway structures and vehicles, train-rail contact issues; control and signaling solutions, electrification in high-speed rail, and other important scientific and technical issues were discussed and exchanged frankly, clarifying many modern, complex, and interdisciplinary technical problems, helping to consolidate the scientific and technical foundation and take a solid step towards establishing Vietnam's position in mastering core high-speed rail technology.

A group of lecturers from the University of Transport and Communications presented their research on technical proposals for the North-South high-speed railway project. According to the group's assessment, China's experience shows that for distances under 800km, high-speed rail is suitable, while air travel is only advisable for distances of 1,000km or more.

High-speed rail projects in Vietnam require attention to issues such as weak soil conditions, weather factors, and sunlight. A research group led by Dr. Trinh Viet Nam (Republic of France) focused on the design of high-speed rail foundations in France and the UK, and proposed solutions for Vietnam.

Dr. Trinh Viet Nam proposed three key areas: selecting technology and pavement structure for high-speed railways, establishing technical standards for high-speed railways, and training and attracting talent to the railway industry.

Following the workshop, a short-term training course on high-speed rail design, jointly organized by the University of Transport and Communications and Southwest University of Transport, attracted over 100 engineers and researchers from universities and companies. It provided valuable knowledge on high-speed rail standards, foundation design, superstructure design, bridges, and tunnels for high-speed rail according to Chinese and European standards, meeting the practical knowledge needs of the Vietnamese railway industry in the current period.
