What does the Automobile and Motorcycle Association say about E10 gasoline?

(Chinhphu.vn) - On May 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported on the feedback from the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM) and the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) regarding the issue of vehicles compatible with E10 bioethanol fuel.

According to VAMA's preliminary assessment, all models currently in production are compatible with E10 gasoline.

Specifically, VAMM, which includes member motorcycle manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, SYM, and Suzuki, has compiled data to assess the suitability and impact of E10 bioethanol on various engine types.

Accordingly, most models from Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, and SYM are compatible with E10 gasoline and do not require any technical modifications. As for Suzuki, most models are compatible except for the following models, for which compatibility information is pending: Viva 110, Smash, Smash Revo, Shogun, Amity, AN125, GN125, Hayate, EN150, Gz150, UA125, and GD110.

VAMM fully agrees with the direction of expanding the use of E10 gasoline, but it should be noted that gasoline used for vehicles must meet the quality standards corresponding to the vehicle's emission standards.

According to VAMA's preliminary assessment, all currently manufactured vehicles are compatible with E10 gasoline. However, concerns remain regarding vehicles manufactured before E10 gasoline became widely available. These vehicles were not designed to be compatible with E10 gasoline and may experience operational problems when using it.

According to information from a VAMA member company, the light truck model produced by their company since 1996 is not compatible with E10 gasoline. Production of this model ceased in 2023, and to date, more than 60,000 of these vehicles have been sold on the market.

In addition, several other manufacturers are currently reviewing all of their past vehicle models to compile the number and assess the impact of E10 fuel on the operation of these vehicles. Through this review, all manufacturers have come to the conclusion that some models manufactured before 2006 are not compatible with E10 gasoline.

No official complaints have been received regarding the quality of the biofuel.

On November 7, 2025, the Minister of Industry and Trade issued Circular No. 50 stipulating the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels in Vietnam. The main content of Circular 50 is that from June 1, 2026, unleaded gasoline (according to current national technical standards) must be blended into E10 gasoline for use in gasoline engines nationwide; and the blending of E5RON92 gasoline for use in gasoline engines will continue until December 31, 2030.

In fact, with the nationwide distribution of E5 gasoline starting in January 2028 and the testing and distribution of E10 gasoline starting in August 2025 in some localities and from mid-May 2026 nationwide by PVOil and Petrolimex , the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the businesses distributing E10 gasoline have not received any official complaints from users regarding the quality of E5 and E10 bio-gasoline or any negative impacts on engine performance and lifespan.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade affirms that the use of biofuels and bioethanol is a correct policy of the Government, implemented since 2012 by Prime Minister's Decision 53. In the context of developing a green, low-carbon economy , reducing dependence on fossil fuels for sustainable development and contributing to national energy security, increasing the use of biofuels and bioethanol is essential.
