The shape of the North Expressway

Việt NamViệt Nam04/08/2023

Taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, contractors are mobilizing maximum manpower and machinery, dividing into multiple construction teams to accelerate the North-South expressway project through Ha Tinh . Although construction has not been long, the shape of the expressway through Ha Tinh is gradually taking form.

484 Joint Stock Company is constructing the Vung Ang - Bung section of the route.

While closely monitoring the excavation and leveling work on the hill near National Highway (NH) 12C, engineer Nguyen Duc Thong (from Company 484 - one of the five contractors undertaking the XL-01 construction package of the Vung Ang - Bung expressway) gestured for us to wait when he saw people approaching.

As the work settled into a routine, Engineer Thong approached, removed his mask and safety helmet, and chatted with us. Engineer Thong said that the current weather was favorable, so the unit was working hard to speed up the hill leveling process. Each day, the company's workers and engineers work shifts from 6 am to 7 pm.

484 Joint Stock Company is focusing on excavating and leveling the hill near National Highway 12C.

The XL-01 construction package for the Vung Ang - Bung expressway section, spanning 32.5 km (12.9 km through Ha Tinh province), is valued at 5,200 billion VND. The contractor is responsible for constructing a section of over 3 km. The construction area is the intersection with National Highway 12C in Ky Tan commune, Ky Anh district, which is also the starting point of the Vung Ang - Bung expressway section.

From the very beginning of construction, 484 Joint Stock Company mobilized maximum human and material resources to carry out roadbed excavation and construct the drainage system for the main expressway.

Specifically, in the area where the hill is being leveled near National Highway 12C, there are currently 13 excavators, 4 bulldozers, 6 rock drilling machines with blasting, 8 vibratory rollers, 50 vehicles transporting construction materials, and nearly 100 workers diligently at work. To date, the unit has excavated approximately 1 million cubic meters of soil from the hill's base and filled in 300,000 cubic meters of earth.

"In the past period, the unit's construction has been quite smooth as the local authorities have fully handed over the land, and the construction area is mainly hilly, so the excavation and embankment of the road foundation have not been affected, thanks to the utilization of local materials," engineer Thong shared.

The section of the Ham Nghi - Vung Ang expressway passing through Ky Tan commune, Ky Anh district, is currently being expedited by the contractor.

The atmosphere of urgent and bustling work is also evident at the construction site of Son Hai Group. In the XL-01 construction package for the Vung Ang - Bung expressway section, this contractor is responsible for 5 km of the main route and the nearly 1 km long Deo But road tunnel.

The sight of hundreds of workers, engineers, and modern equipment and machinery diligently working on the construction site has become familiar.

Son Hai Group mobilized machinery and personnel to construct the main drainage system and drill the road tunnel at Deo But Pass.

After excavating the organic soil and backfilling the main roadbed, Son Hai Group is now focusing on drilling the Deo But tunnel and constructing the drainage system. In early May, the contractor began blasting at the northern entrance of the Deo But tunnel and has currently drilled 12 out of 840 meters of the right tunnel tube and 20 out of 716 meters of the left tunnel tube.

According to Mr. Do Quoc Tuan, Director of the Construction Management Board of Son Hai Group, due to the characteristics of the terrain and the upcoming rainy season in the construction area, which affects the work, especially tunnel drilling, the company is increasing manpower and equipment to improve construction. Ensuring progress while maintaining quality and safety are always the top priorities.

The Deo But Tunnel is designed with two tunnel tubes, measuring 716m and 840m in length respectively.

The Vung Ang - Bung expressway section, 55.34 km long with a total investment of VND 12,548 billion, passes through Ha Tinh (12.9 km) and Quang Binh (42.44 km) provinces. It was commenced simultaneously with 12 other North-South expressway projects in the East, phase 2021-2025, on January 1, 2023. Due to the need for site preparation and land clearance, contractors were only able to begin simultaneous construction in March.

Although the project has only been underway for four months, with contractors mobilizing 728 workers and engineers along with 314 pieces of machinery and equipment, divided into 38 construction teams, the volume of work completed so far meets the planned schedule.

Specifically, on this section of the route, 2.5/5.6 million of roadbed excavation has been completed, 1,344/2,927 million of roadbed embankment has been completed, 338/569 bored piles have been drilled, 29/457 Super T beams have been cast, 22/45 I-beams have been cast, 2,141/2,509m of prefabricated circular and box culverts have been installed, and 3,170/5,909 m³ of pedestrian underpasses have been constructed…

The Hung Duc Bridge, spanning the Lam River and connecting Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces on the North-South expressway, is currently under construction.

Along with the Vung Ang - Bung section, Ha Tinh province currently has two projects of the North-South Expressway (Eastern section) giai đoạn 2021-2025: Bai Vot - Ham Nghi (35.28 km) and Ham Nghi - Vung Ang (54.2 km), both of which are under construction.

At the construction site of the interchange connecting the Bai Vot - Ham Nghi expressway section (2021-2025 phase) with the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway section (2017-2020 phase), being constructed by Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Corporation (Vinaconex), the contractor is strictly adhering to the project schedule.

Vinaconex, the contractor, is focusing its manpower and machinery on constructing the interchange connecting the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway section with the Bai Vot - Ham Nghi expressway section, in the area passing through Thanh Binh Thinh commune, Duc Tho district.

According to engineer Bui Quoc Hung, the site manager of the interchange construction project by Vinaconex Company, the interchange project was started on January 1, 2023, but the requirement for completion by June 2024 – matching the timeline of the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway section – instead of the end of 2025, has created significant pressure on the construction schedule.

However, for the sake of the project's overall goals, the contractor is working day and night to ensure the project stays on schedule. Currently, the contractor has mobilized 40 engineers and workers, along with 6 vibratory rollers, 3 bulldozers, 2 pile drilling machines, 2 cement-stabilized soil construction rigs, and 40 trucks for transporting soil and sand, divided into 3 shifts and 4 teams for construction.

Contractors are mobilizing maximum manpower and machinery to ensure the construction progresses on schedule.

Observations show that the atmosphere on construction sites is more bustling and urgent as many bottlenecks related to land availability and construction materials are being actively resolved by local authorities in coordination with investors and contractors.

Although the recent rains slowed down the construction pace, as soon as the rain stopped and the roadbed dried, hundreds of engineers, workers, and machinery resumed their work with even greater urgency. Each task was carried out meticulously and carefully by the engineers and workers, with supervisory consultants inspecting and evaluating each stage of the project.

The contractors are working day and night to ensure the project stays on schedule.

For critical sections of the project, including the construction of service roads and the treatment of weak soil foundations at bridge and underpass construction sites, the investor - Thang Long Project Management Board (Ministry of Transport) - has requested the contractor to focus on construction and strive to complete them before the rainy season.

Thanks to Ha Tinh's efforts in land clearance, resolving bottlenecks in construction material supply, and the contractor's decisive construction work, the shape of the North-South expressway through the province is gradually taking form, carrying with it hopes and aspirations for a "take-off" for the province's transportation and freight sector, contributing to trade connectivity and opening up many development opportunities.
