FIFA continuously announces violations of Malaysian football. |
The 65-page ruling by the FIFA Appeals Committee overturned the Malaysian Home Minister’s “no forgery” claim, exposing FAM’s submission of false documents to legalize the status of a group of naturalized players.
Less than two months after Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution confidently asserted on social media that there was no forgery in the naturalization of seven foreign players, FIFA has come to a completely opposite conclusion. In a recently released 65-page document, the FIFA Appeals Committee pointed out a series of violations in the dossier submitted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), showing that forged documents were indeed used.
The case of JDT defender Jon Irazabal is the clearest example. FIFA analyzed four versions of the birth certificate of the player’s grandfather, Gregorio Irazabal y Lamiquiz, including the FAM version, the Malaysian government version, the player’s version and the file collected by FIFA itself. Of these, only the FIFA document was determined to be valid.
The version submitted by FAM claims that Gregorio was born in “Luching, Kingdom of Sarawak”, a place that does not exist. The document also shows signs of editing, lacks consistency and cannot be verified.
The Malaysian file was also found to be incomplete, dated and unreliable, while the Spanish version of the file verified by FIFA showed a proper registration, complete with identification codes and legally valid.

FIFA carefully analyzed Malaysia's violations when the country's Football Federation sent documents proving the origin of naturalized players. |
Through cross-examination, FIFA concluded that Gregorio Irazabal y Lamiquiz was born in Guernica y Luno (Spain), and has absolutely no connection to Malaysia as the parties have claimed. This means that the basis for legitimizing Jon Irazabal’s “Malaysian origin” and many other cases is false.
FIFA’s findings have put FAM in the center of a public storm, and have shaken previous statements by Malaysian authorities about the transparency of the player naturalization process. This is considered a major turning point in the ongoing investigation, with the risk of causing many consequences for Malaysian football in the coming time.
