The recent consecutive floods have damaged the transport infrastructure of many mountainous communes in Quang Ngai province, deeply submerged many residential areas, and destroyed hundreds of hectares of crops. Immediately after the storm, the authorities coordinated with local authorities to mobilize local forces to support people in rebuilding production and stabilizing their lives.

Together with the people to restore production

Since late October, heavy rains and floods have severely damaged many areas of crops and livestock in Ngoc Linh commune. After the water receded, commune officials went to each residential area to help people restore their fields. Mr. A Bec's family in Kung Rang village had 2,300 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants over two years old that were broken in the recent heavy rains, causing hundreds of millions of dong in damage. After the storm, the commune sent agricultural officials to help reinforce the ginseng garden, restore the damaged area and replant the lost ginseng plots. "Agricultural officials instructed me on how to care for the ginseng plants so they could recover better. The commune People's Committee is also trying to find sources of seeds and seedlings to help us replant," Mr. A Bec shared.

In Mang Ri commune, prolonged heavy rains have washed away many areas of coffee and rice. The commune People's Committee has established support groups to help people harvest and restore production in villages. Mr. A Len, Dak Kinh village, said: Nearly 7 sao of rice of his family was flooded, but thanks to the government and volunteers' support in harvesting, there was no major damage.

In the days after the storm, the top priority of many mountainous communes in Quang Ngai province was "no one goes hungry, no one is homeless". After the flood receded, local authorities focused on stabilizing people's livelihoods, especially in remote areas. According to Chairman of Mang Ri Commune People's Committee Pham Xuan Quang, the urgent task was to restore new crop production. The commune mobilized forces to support clearing and reinforcing ginseng gardens, restoring coffee and rice areas, and coordinating with specialized agencies to provide technical guidance on caring for short-term crops, fruit trees and industrial trees after floods.

In addition, mountainous communes also supported people to plant additional rice, crops, industrial plants and medicinal herbs that were damaged. The agricultural sector sent specialized staff to the grassroots to guide households to improve the soil and grow winter vegetables instead; supported households in raising livestock and aquaculture, treated the environment in farming areas and repaired damaged ponds.

More resources needed for disaster-hit areas

The mountainous localities in the west of Quang Ngai have made many efforts and implemented synchronous solutions to focus on restoring production and stabilizing the lives of people in disaster-hit areas. However, in the context of the province's recent merger, grassroots resources are still very limited and difficult. In Ngoc Linh and Mang Ri, many inter-commune and inter-village roads have been eroded and broken; the canal system and irrigation works have been severely damaged.

Mang Ri commune alone has 3,700 hectares of medicinal plants, of which more than 2,600 hectares are Ngoc Linh ginseng. Steep terrain and high forest cover make ginseng susceptible to weather changes, causing crop failures. In Ngoc Linh commune, more than 20 hectares of industrial crops and crops such as rice, coffee, and macadamia were swept away by floods; thousands of Ngoc Linh ginseng trees were broken and buried due to landslides.

According to Secretary of the Ngoc Linh Commune Party Committee A Phuong, natural disasters have caused great damage to the raw material areas of industrial crops and medicinal plants, making it difficult to restore production. The locality is in dire need of support for seedlings and breeds to reorganize production on the damaged areas. In the long term, there should be a policy to support funding for people to continue to plant new areas of high-value medicinal plants.

Every year, the mountainous area of Quang Ngai often faces severe natural disasters. After each flood, the recovery of production in agricultural, industrial and medicinal plant growing areas faces many challenges. Therefore, this area is in great need of strong support from the central ministries, branches and Quang Ngai province so that people in the flood-affected areas can soon stabilize their lives. The authorities need to support materials, seedlings, livestock, veterinary medicine; restore canals and irrigation; repair roads to production areas and raw material areas for the year-end harvest.

Chairman of the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Giang affirmed: Authorities at all levels are focusing on overcoming the consequences of floods and storms, and urgently restoring agricultural areas for the new crop. Depending on local conditions, appropriate measures to restore infrastructure and production will be deployed to soon stabilize people's lives.
