On July 30th, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Management Center ( Quang Nam province) - the unit responsible for the restoration of the Japanese Bridge - whitewashed a portion of the bridge after the restoration.

Accordingly, the workers continued to whitewash the side of the Bridge Pagoda that had been previously painted white.

The side section of the Bridge Pagoda was whitewashed for the second time.

Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Management Center, said that this was a multi-layer whitewashing process, and the second coat is currently being applied, but the color remains unchanged. The main structure, already finished in color, will not be whitewashed again.

Previously, on July 25th, after nearly 20 months of restoration, the entire structure, made of iron frames and corrugated iron roofs, surrounding the bridge pagoda was dismantled.

The new look of the Japanese Bridge after its restoration has received mixed opinions regarding its rather bright paint color. Many people believe that this paint color detracts from the ancient, moss-covered beauty of the structure, which is the heart of Hoi An Old Town.

The Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Management Center stated that the restoration work always ensures the preservation of as many existing physical traces as possible, authentically reflecting the historical and cultural values of the Japanese Bridge. This aims to preserve the architectural and artistic values that have created the iconic image of Hoi An.

The main parts of the building, once finished in their original color, will not be repainted.

The restoration work is carried out with a scientific approach in calculating intervention solutions, based on thorough and authentic research and objective, comprehensive assessments of the monument.

Furthermore, the restoration of the Bridge Pagoda is considered as a whole, not separating the restoration of the architectural components of the monument from the beautification of the surrounding landscape. Unnecessary interventions should be minimized to avoid altering the fundamental characteristics that constitute the value of the monument…

Reportedly, the project to restore the Bridge Pagoda has a total investment of over 20.2 billion VND. Of this, the Quang Nam provincial budget contributes 50%, and the Hoi An city budget allocates the remaining 50%.

The project is invested by the People's Committee of Hoi An City, implemented by the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Management Center, and advised by the Center for Conservation of Monuments Consulting - Institute of Conservation of Monuments.

The restoration project of the Bridge Pagoda is expected to be inaugurated on August 3rd.
