In Hanoi, students must achieve a perfect score of 10 in 14 out of 17 subjects at the end of the school year in primary school, and a score of 9 in the remaining subjects to be eligible to take the entrance exam for the 6th grade at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students.

According to an announcement signed on May 18th, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students will be recruiting 200 students for the 6th grade this year. The two rounds of preliminary selection and entrance exams will remain the same as in previous years. The deadline for submitting applications is 5 PM on May 27th.

The preliminary selection round took place from June 2nd to 5th, based on academic transcripts. The school considered the total scores from end-of-term exams in Mathematics and Vietnamese (grades 1-5); Science , History, and Geography (grades 4 and 5); and English (grades 3-5). The maximum score was 170. Students achieving 167 points or higher were eligible to take the entrance exam. This means students needed to score 10 points in at least 14 subjects and 9 points in the remaining three to advance to the next round.

The entrance exam took place on June 23rd. In the morning, students took the Vietnamese and English exams, and in the afternoon, the Math exam. Each subject lasted 45 minutes and combined multiple-choice and essay questions. The admission score was the sum of the three exam scores, excluding priority points, with a maximum of 30 points. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training was responsible for preparing the exam questions, organizing the invigilation, and grading.

The results were announced on July 5th. Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students will select candidates from top to bottom until all slots are filled. In case of a tie in scores, the candidate with the higher preliminary score will be given priority. Successful candidates will enroll within three days, from July 7th to 9th.

Last year, the cutoff score for admission to the school was 17 points.

According to the Department of Education and Training, junior high schools will admit students based on their residential area, while high-quality schools will admit students from across the city. If the number of applicants exceeds the quota, high-quality schools may use a combination of selection and entrance exams, to be completed before July 12th.

Currently, in addition to the Hanoi - Amsterdam specialized secondary school system, the capital city has three other high-quality secondary schools: Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, and Nam Tu Liem.
