Grade 12 students before the first exam under the new program

As the first generation of students to take the high school graduation exam under the 2018 General Education Program, many 12th graders consider themselves to be the "pioneer generation" when facing many continuous changes and fluctuations.

2025 is the first year that the Ministry of Education and Training organizes exams according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program (new program) with many changes in the structure of the exam questions and the way to choose subjects. This is also the first year that the Ministry of Education and Training does not allow universities to consider early admission and requires converting scores in all methods to a common scale, and at the same time, introduces many other new regulations to ensure fair admission.

Ho Chi Minh City National University's Aptitude Test: More than 70% of candidates took both tests

On the morning of June 1, more than 90,000 candidates entered the second round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam in 11 localities, including: Hue, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Tien Giang and An Giang . Notably, more than 70% of candidates who took the first round still registered to participate in the second round to improve their scores.

According to Thanh Nien reporters' observations at testing sites in Ho Chi Minh City, most candidates commented that the second round of exams was "easier" than the first round at the end of March.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the results of the second round of exams are expected to be announced on June 16.

In 2025, there will be 111 universities and colleges considering the competency test scores of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

"But these changes will only be finalized in the admission regulations at the end of March. This makes us always nervous. I have achieved an IELTS score of 8.0, a score of over 100 on the Hanoi National University's HSA test, but I am still afraid of failing my favorite major," HM, a 12th grade student at a high school in Hanoi, shared.

"A LOT OF PRESSURE"

HM said that in the current final weeks, she is still focusing on reviewing for the high school graduation exam and not resting. The female student believes that this is an "extremely important" method to compete with other candidates in case the HSA score is "not as high as expected" after conversion. "Even my classmates who plan to study abroad are studying hard because I heard that countries are considering visas more strictly than before," M. shared.

Sharing M.'s sentiments, many 12th graders expressed their concerns on social networking sites about this year's high school graduation exam and university entrance exam. "Many universities have changed their admission plans but only announced them in May or June, which causes a lot of pressure," another student confided.

Having just completed the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment test on the morning of June 1, Tat Thai Thanh Tam, a 12th grade student at Luong The Vinh High School (Ho Chi Minh City), confessed that he still does not fully understand the conversion of results from this test to the general scale. However, Tam believes that the university will find the most beneficial and fair solution for candidates, because this is one of the important exams before the high school graduation exam with a large number of candidates.

Tam and more than 67,000 other candidates in the South have registered to take the second round of the competency assessment exam after taking the first round. This year, the number of candidates retaking the second round is also a record high in the history of the exam. "In my opinion, one of the reasons is that candidates are afraid of the high school graduation exam being organized for the first time under the new program, so they want to have an additional backup method for university admission," Tam explained.

" ALMOST EVERYTHING IS NEW"

Nguyen Minh Hang, a 12th grade student at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (HCMC), said that she and her peers are the "pioneer generation", not only in the new program but also in her school - as this is the first year the school has changed its uniform to brighter colors. "This is the motivation for us to confidently open a new, brighter chapter", the female student shared.

"Up to now, I still really like the new program because it allows me to choose the subjects I love, no longer having to "study in a biased way" like in middle school. However, I am also worried about university admissions because I cannot rely on previous precedents. The school I want to apply to only released its admission plan in early May, later than every year," Hang confided.

Agreeing, Kieu Minh Tri, a 12th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), said it was "a bit stressful" to be a "pioneer generation" because almost everything was new, "and I had to learn how to survive on my own". "But thanks to that, I learned how to make my own decisions and create the path that best suits me. We no longer study to memorize or to get the right answers on tests, but learn to draw our own conclusions from existing knowledge", Tri shared.

"Because we were the first batch, we encountered many difficulties such as not having enough documents, the test structure was unclear, and the teachers had to "teach and update at the same time". But thanks to that, we learned to be flexible, self-study, and express our opinions much more boldly than before," the male student said.

In the final weeks before the high school graduation exam, Tri shared that he was not too worried. He is currently focusing on reviewing the knowledge he has learned over the past 3 years, not focusing on solving problems anymore but looking at where he is wrong, where he has gaps in knowledge to consolidate further. "My family also limits my use of social networks, sets specific time frames, and when using it, it must have a clear purpose to avoid wasting unnecessary time...", Tri added.

Bao Phuong, a 12th grade student in Nha Trang City (Khanh Hoa), said that in addition to reviewing for cultural subjects, she is also focusing on practicing fine arts to prepare for the aptitude test organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture this weekend. "Personally, I feel that the new program helps me have more time to understand my passion better and have the best preparation, without having to spread out to take exams in subjects I am not interested in," the female student shared.

WHAT DO TEACHERS ADVICE?

In response to students' concerns, Mr. Nguyen Van Ba, Vice Principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), advised students to study carefully, do many types of questions and test papers according to the structure from the Ministry of Education and Training, and learn how to allocate time effectively. "The test emphasizes the ability to link knowledge with real life with 40% of questions at the level of recognition, 30% of comprehension and 30% of application. Students can ask their subject teachers for more guidance on how to practice correctly," he instructed.

Mr. Ba also believes that in addition to studying, students must focus on a scientific lifestyle, ensure adequate sleep, balanced nutrition and maintain a stable mental state. "You should create breaks, participate in your favorite activities and keep in touch with friends to avoid excessive pressure. Remember to prepare enough stationery and be confident in your abilities," he added.

One of the new points of this year's exam is that the test materials will no longer be in textbooks like in previous years. Master Tran Ha Phuong, a literature teacher at Luong Dinh Cua High School (Can Tho City), warned candidates not to "learn by heart" any genre but to grasp the characteristics of each genre, especially the genres taught in the 12th grade program. "In addition, you should grasp the structure of the high school graduation exam," Ms. Phuong said.

At the same time, the female teacher also advised the candidates to pay attention to the concepts, keywords, questions, and ways of asking in the reading section and the length and type of the writing section. "You need to update newspapers, social news to have more knowledge and practical understanding that is useful for your essay. Besides, candidates should read textbooks carefully, review according to the teacher's instructions in class and regularly solve problems, keep track of time and refer to exam questions on the internet," Ms. Phuong emphasized.

"Believe in yourself and focus on the exam by making a detailed schedule. In addition, remember to ensure good health, a comfortable mentality and maintain determination, then any goal and dream will come true. Remember that the whole society, school, family and friends will always support you on the upcoming exam journey," the female master advised.
