What should students do when they are beaten up?

Recently, there have been more and more cases of students being beaten up by groups. The consequences are very serious, both physically and mentally.

In the unfortunate event of becoming a victim of gang violence, what should students do to minimize the possible consequences?

According to Lieutenant Colonel, Doctor of Criminology Dao Trung Hieu, the common characteristic of victims of gang beatings is the state of immediate panic when subjected to violence. This panic will "tie up" the victim's hands and feet, leaving them with no choice but to stand still and endure the "shower of blows".

A student in Dong Anh District ( Hanoi ) was beaten by a group of people. The incident is being verified and processed.

Don't stand still and take the hit.

If you know in advance that you will be beaten, you should proactively inform the principal, homeroom teacher or call your family... If you feel safe (with teachers, relatives, friends... nearby), you can proactively meet the other person to talk, to prevent the incident from happening.

Remember to always go with your friends after school or during recess, never go alone. Many people are always safer, because if you have friends around, bullies will not dare to do anything.

Lieutenant Colonel Hieu reminded that you should never "obediently" talk to the other person as requested. In a situation where you are at a disadvantage, try to avoid meeting the bully, but do not let them know this; if they know you are afraid, they will only push you further.

"If they are on the same path as you, take another path, because when they can't see you, they can't bully you," Lieutenant Colonel Hieu suggested.

In a situation where you are forced to face a bully without outside help, show yourself as someone who is not easy to bully; a strong attitude from your gestures to your way of speaking will make the other person falter.

In case of being surrounded and beaten, you should not stand there and take the beating, fight back, take the opportunity to run away to a safe place such as the teachers' room, the principal's office (if being beaten at school), or the police headquarters, traffic police teams, houses... (if being beaten on the street).

At the same time, you should shout loudly and call for help to attract the attention of people around, because the other party is also afraid of beating someone and will be punished if caught red-handed.

As soon as you escape from the subject, you need to consider the risk of being beaten again, call your family, inform your teachers... to proactively resolve the situation.

Another important thing comes from the victim's friends. If you know that your friend may be beaten, you need to warn the victim in advance so that they can take precautions. When you witness your friend being beaten, you need to call for help; if you feel unsafe, do not rush in to stop it, because you will get caught up in it, or even be beaten up by a group.

Incidents of gang violence often leave serious consequences for both the health and mental health of the victims.

What to do if you get beaten up on the street?

Students in particular, and people in general, if they are riding a motorbike on the road and are chased and stopped by a group of people causing trouble, they need to quickly get off the motorbike, lock the neck, take the keys and run away, shouting "robbery" as they run.

Lieutenant Colonel Hieu reminded, absolutely do not ask, argue, or quarrel. If you are surrounded, do not stand in the middle of the encirclement but lean against a wall, electric pole, or tree to avoid being ambushed from behind.

"You can fight back and then observe quickly, proactively attack the weakest person, and open a path to escape," the doctor suggested.

In case of being surrounded and unable to run, the beaten person needs to protect the vulnerable areas of the body such as the eyes, head, genitals, temples, nape, abdomen, etc. by constantly moving (should not stand still in one place). At the same time, scream and call for help loudly to attract the help of others.

The victim has the right to legitimate defense, which means he is allowed to fight back as necessary to prevent the attack and protect himself; if he can grab a stick or a brick as a weapon, he is allowed to defend himself and fight back against the person attacking him.

If the subject is hit, the victim should run away as soon as possible, shouting while running to attract the curiosity of the people, making the perpetrator shy away. Places to run to are the police headquarters, traffic police teams on the road.

In case of running into a house, the person being beaten should run into a room with a safe door, close it, call the police 113 and family; tell the homeowner that they were robbed and ask to hide, ask them to close the door, call the police...
