Tan Ky 3 High School, Tan An Commune was severely affected by the recent flood when the entire school was submerged in floodwaters more than 1 meter deep. Immediately after the water receded, responding to the principal's call, hundreds of teachers, students, parents, authorities, organizations and a number of schools urgently cleaned up and dredged mud. The school also received support from a number of businesses and organizations with nearly 200 million VND to have additional funds to overcome the damage.
Before the students returned to school, a local clinic helped the school disinfect and clean the campus, ensuring a safe learning environment. After much effort, on the morning of October 6, all students returned to school.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Hai, Principal of Tan Ky 3 High School, added that although the storm and flood recovery work has been basically completed, the school determined that in the first days, many students will still face difficulties due to damaged or washed away houses and books. Therefore, as soon as students return to school, the school requires teachers to count the number of students who cannot come to school on time and those who are missing books and notebooks in order to have a plan to support and arrange appropriate knowledge compensation.
The school also reminds parents and students to ensure absolute safety on the way to school, especially in flooded or landslide areas. The Health Department is ready to receive, care for students' health and support in handling common health problems after the flood. Teachers are willing to spend time sharing, encouraging, helping students stabilize their spirits and quickly catch up with the curriculum.
At Thanh Mai Secondary School, Bich Hao Commune, on the morning of October 6, all students returned to school after a week off due to flooding. Before that, anticipating that some areas in the hamlet such as Phu Lap, Yen Son, Mai Dinh might still be flooded, making travel difficult, the school principal went directly to each class early in the morning to remind parents to take students through the flooded sections. The school assigned teachers to coordinate with the authorities to be present in the flooded areas, assisting students through the flooded sections.
Teacher Dang Anh Dung, the school’s principal, shared that although there were still many flooded areas, in the first day of school after the flood, all students were basically present. Some students were sick or had family matters that prevented them from attending school, so the school asked teachers to help with their lessons.
In recent days, many students in Nghe An have not been able to go to school because schools were flooded or the roads to school were cut off. Immediately after the water receded, local authorities dispatched functional forces to coordinate with parents and teachers to clean up and repair the situation.
Teacher Nguyen Thi Linh, Principal of Chau Nhan Kindergarten, Lam Thanh Commune, said that up to now, the school has basically cleaned the campus. However, because preschool students are susceptible to diseases after the flood, especially pink eye, the school sprayed disinfectant and mosquito repellent on Monday morning to ensure the safety of students before returning to school.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Chief of Office of Nghe An Department of Education and Training, said that last week, due to the impact of floods, many schools in the province in the districts of Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen, Yen Thanh, Tan Ky, Quy Chau (old) were deeply submerged in water and affected the organization of teaching and learning at the schools. Therefore, in addition to the efforts of the schools and the support of local authorities, the Department also requested schools to report the situation of damage and have support plans in the coming time. Schools should proactively grasp the situation and only organize teaching and learning again when they ensure the necessary conditions to ensure absolute safety for teachers and students when going to school.
