Outstanding marks
From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Vietnamese peasants were heavily oppressed under the colonial-feudal regime. In his book The Revolutionary Path (1927), comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc raised the issue that if Vietnamese peasants wanted to escape oppression and exploitation, they had to “organize together”.
From that ideology, Red Peasant Associations were born one after another in many localities. In October 1930, at the first Central Conference, the Party Central Committee issued a Resolution to establish the Indochina General Peasant Association (the first name of the Vietnam Peasant Association ) and approved the Charter, marking an important turning point in the history of the Vietnamese peasant class under the leadership of the Party.
In 1941, following the policy of the 8th Central Party Conference, the Farmers' Association was called the Vietnam Farmers' National Salvation Association, a part of the Viet Minh Front. Farmers across the country rose up to fight to expel the Japanese and French, directly contributing to the great victory of the August Revolution of 1945.
During the resistance war against French colonialism, the Vietnam Farmers' Salvation Association continued to promote its role in mobilizing all farmers to participate on all fronts. In 1949, the Party Central Committee issued a Resolution to establish the Central Agricultural Mobilization Committee, with the task of mobilizing farmers to increase production, become self-sufficient, support soldiers, build cooperatives, complete rent reduction, implement interest reduction, train cadres and eliminate illiteracy.
In the Letter to the First Conference of the Central Farmers' Movement Committee, President Ho Chi Minh highly appreciated the position, role and great potential of the peasant class nationwide in the struggle for power and the resistance cause. The Conference unanimously agreed to establish the Central Farmers' Association for National Salvation, the first time the peasant class had an Association organization at the central level.
Since its founding, the peasant movement has had a new, comprehensive and strong development, notably the movements: Nghe Tinh Soviet 1930-1931, Drumbeat in 1930 in Tien Hai (Thai Binh), Eradicating hunger, illiteracy, foreign invaders, Popular Education, Rice Jar for Resistance... which made important contributions to the victory of the campaigns, contributing to the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7, 1954.
After the Geneva Agreement, in the North, farmers enthusiastically produced and built socialism; in the South, the political struggle of farmers took place strongly and fiercely. In 1961, the Farmers' Association for the Liberation of South Vietnam was established. Responding to the movements of "Killing the enemy and making achievements" and "Three responsibilities", farmers in the South clung to their land and villages, hid revolutionary cadres, participated in the resistance war, and took the lead on the production front, contributing to resounding victories, liberating the South, and unifying the country.
The country was unified, to meet the requirements of the new situation, the Politburo decided to establish a unified organization of working farmers throughout the country, with a system from the Central to the grassroots, named the Vietnam Collective Farmers' Union (1979). The Association has the task of gathering and uniting farmers to educate and mobilize farmers to implement the policies of the Party and the State.
By 1988, the Vietnam Collective Farmers' Union was renamed the Vietnam Farmers' Union, affirming its role as a large socio-political organization of the peasant class under the leadership of the Party. In 1991, the Politburo decided to take October 14, 1930 as the founding day of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, recognizing the historical role of the organization throughout the revolutionary journey.
During the renovation period, the Vietnam Farmers' Union has always promoted its mission well, being an important bridge between farmers and the Party and the State; stepping up propaganda, mobilizing, uniting and gathering farmers, promoting the role of farmers as the mainstay in agricultural development, rural economy, and new rural construction, making an important contribution to bringing the country from a place of food shortage to become the world's leading exporter of rice, seafood and some other agricultural products, making agriculture a pillar of the economy.
The peasantry is increasingly dynamic, gradually improving its qualifications, improving its living standards, and contributing positively to the country's economic development and socio-political stability.
Continue to affirm role and position in the new era
In recent years, Farmers' Associations at all levels have been proactive, creative, closely following the Party and State's guidelines and policies, innovating their methods of operation, and focusing on the grassroots. The core role of the Association in building the peasant class and effectively implementing movements has been increasingly affirmed.
The key patriotic emulation movements launched by the Farmers' Association such as "Farmers produce and do business well, unite to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably"; "Cadres, members and farmers actively participate in developing collective economy in agriculture" attracted a large number of cadres and members of farmers to participate, bringing practical results, actively contributing to socio-economic development, building new rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction. Consulting, service, support and vocational training activities for farmers, developing economic models, cooperatives and cooperatives continued to be promoted, promoting economic restructuring.
Compared to the previous 5 years, the number of member households and farmers with an income of 500 million VND/year has increased 3 times, more than 1 billion VND/year has increased 2 times, with some households earning more than 100 billion VND/year. The result of one year of implementing the movement to develop collective economy in agriculture has been the establishment of 679 new cooperatives, nearly 4,000 cooperative groups, attracting more than 700 thousand farmer members to participate.
Along with that, activities of participating in Party and government building, social supervision and criticism, ensuring national defense, security, foreign affairs and international cooperation have been strengthened, achieving many positive results, contributing to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of farmer members, promoting the role as a bridge between the Party, government and people, affirming the position and role of the Vietnam Farmers' Union in the political system and enhancing the prestige and status of the Union with international friends and partners.
Through eight Congresses, the Vietnam Farmers' Union has continuously improved its organization, innovated its content and methods of operation, and become the center and backbone of the farmers' movement and new rural construction.
With the theme "Solidarity-Democracy-Creativity-Cooperation-Development", the 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, term 2023-2028, determined the direction to build a strong Union; promote the role of farmers as the subject and center in agricultural development, rural economy and new rural construction; arouse the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country.
Over 95 years of construction and development, the great contributions of the Association have been recognized by the Party, State and people and awarded many noble awards such as the Gold Star Order in 1988, 2010; Ho Chi Minh Order in 2020; First-class Independence Order in 1998; First-class Labor Order in 1999, 2015, 2019.
The great achievements and outstanding marks affirm that the Party's leadership is the decisive factor in all victories of the Vietnam Farmers' Union; building a team of Union officials with capacity, qualities and enthusiasm; innovating the content and methods of mobilizing farmers, focusing on the grassroots, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of members; focusing on leadership, direction, inspection, supervision, replicating advanced models, promoting the effectiveness of patriotic emulation movements; promoting democracy, dialogue and social criticism, closely coordinating between the Union organization and Party committees and authorities at all levels, creating a combined strength in agricultural and rural development.
In the new era - the era of national growth, the Vietnam Farmers' Union (October 14, 1930 - October 14, 2025) continues to affirm its core role as a solid bridge between the peasant class and the Party and State, contributing to strengthening the great national unity bloc and building a strong country.
