More than 30 years after the impact of the two classic films "The Daughter of the Red Land" and "Like a Legend," the image of the heroine Vo Thi Sau returns to the big screen through the film project "Red Land ." The new film version chooses a more direct and edgy way of telling the story of a historical icon, placing the character between harsh choices and the brutality of war.
According to the producers, the film aims to portray the character of a stubborn, optimistic 13-year-old girl. The project takes viewers back to the years in the Long My war zone and the Ba Ria base area, where children who hadn't yet reached adulthood had to face a harsh reality.

Producer Nguyen Cao Tung said that "Red Land" has been developed by him and director Le Van Kiet over the past seven years. With the belief that history must be respected from the very beginning of the project, the team recognized that the film presented many more challenges than typical commercial film projects. Each year, the screenwriting team and director worked on a new script draft. Only after the sixth version did they feel confident enough to move into the pre-production phase.
Recreating the portrait of the female hero Vo Thi Sau - an immortal symbol in the flow of the country's history - Dat Do (Red Earth) faced the challenge of maintaining its appeal. This was not easy to accomplish because the character's prototype was so familiar to every Vietnamese person.
Over 1,000 audition applications were submitted to the team. Several young faces such as Lam Thanh My, Khanh Ly, Khazsak Pham Thanh Nhi, Mai Cat Vi, Ngan Chi, and Kaycee Kim Khanh attended the casting session in Ho Chi Minh City.
Lam Thanh My shared that upon reading the initial information, the actress felt incredibly excited about this project with its special significance. The actors chose to challenge themselves with emotionally intense scenes, such as the segment where Vo Thi Sau meets her mother for the last time, or the scene where she bravely stands before her enemy.

As the project's lead, director Le Van Kiet hopes to find fresh, vibrant energy and unique personalities in the cast of " Red Land ." Meanwhile, producer Hoang Quan believes that the role of Vo Thi Sau, the female lead, is extremely challenging for any actress. It could be a defining role, but it could also significantly impact their future artistic careers if the actress doesn't perform well.
"We hope to find an actor who matches the energy, age, intensity, and innocence of the role, rather than a box office star. However, that doesn't mean we're ruling out familiar faces from Vietnamese cinema. Suitability for the role is the top priority," the producer said.
The film, "Red Land," is presented as a drama and action film – strengths of director Le Van Kiet. Instead of directly depicting the war, the film delves into an epic journey, setting it apart from other historical works in 2025, while maintaining an entertaining and accessible style for the general public.
Besides the female lead, Vo Thi Sau, the film dedicates a significant amount of time to exploring her comrades and family. This is a key difference between the film and previous versions.
