According to statistics from the Vietnam Port Association (VPA), the volume of import and export containers handled through Vietnamese seaports in January 2024 reached over 1.8 million TEU, an increase of 147% compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, two deep-water ports in the Cai Mep cluster – Ba Ria Vung Tau province saw an increase of more than double.

In the northern region, the increase was 152% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 450,800 TEU. Nam Dinh Vu was the container port with the highest increase (388%) in this region. The HITC deep-water port in Lach Huyen – Hai Phong, with connecting routes to the United States, India, and several other key markets, also saw an increase of up to 173%.
Ports in the central region also saw a 156% increase in container throughput, with Ho Chi Minh City experiencing a 138% increase. The Cai Mep deep-water port in Ba Ria Vung Tau, which receives approximately 30 mother vessels per week connecting to markets in the US, Europe, and India, also saw a high increase of 157%, with Gemalink and TCTT ports more than doubling their capacity.
The high growth in container throughput at ports in January 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 is a positive sign, and also indicates that the Vietnamese economy will have many bright and positive aspects in the coming period.
