Honda has confirmed that it will officially launch the all-new Prelude later this year, as a hybrid Grand Touring-style sports car. According to initial information, this model will use many of the same chassis technologies as the Civic Type R. The car was recently displayed at the F1 Tokyo Fan Festival, before the Japanese F1 race started. Previously, the Honda Prelude 2026 appeared at the Red Bull Showrun with the Honda 0 SUV, with racer Liam Lawson (former member of Red Bull Racing) at the wheel.
Notably, the new Prelude will be equipped with a Dual-Axis MacPherson Strut front suspension system, an improved variation of the traditional MacPherson structure, which helps increase torque control and limit torque steer, while improving steering precision. The brakes have also been upgraded, with four-piston aluminum Brembo calipers and ventilated discs. Although the specific diameter has not been announced, this configuration is equivalent to the Civic Type R, which uses 13.8-inch front and 12-inch rear brake discs. Based on the C-class sedan platform – Honda Civic, it is not surprising that the cockpit of the Prelude 2026 has many similarities with the 11th generation Civic. The car is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital clock cluster, a 9-inch floating entertainment screen, a three-spoke steering wheel, air vents covered with metal mesh and large mechanical air-conditioning knobs.
However, Honda also cleverly differentiates the Prelude. The most prominent is the lightweight flat-bottom steering wheel with integrated 12 o'clock markers - a detail that does not appear on the Civic Type R. The air-conditioning vent system is more compact, with a hexagonal design instead of spanning the entire dashboard. The center console is a push-button gear selector – a typical design on Honda hybrid models worldwide. Next to it is an electronic handbrake button, a driving mode selection button, and especially a large S+ button – possibly related to the gear shifting simulation feature. The sports seats with high shoulders and a back hug are considered to provide a firm sitting feeling and are suitable for a sporty driving style. Although Honda has not revealed specific specifications, the company confirmed that the 2026 Prelude will use a new generation e:HEV hybrid powertrain, combining 1.5L and 2.0L direct-injection gasoline engines, accompanied by a more compact electric motor to improve performance.
The most notable highlight is the S+ Shift driving mode, which simulates gear shifting to provide a realistic driving experience, similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. In addition, many sources say that the Prelude will also be equipped with a dual-axis MacPherson front suspension to reduce head roll (already available on the Civic Type R), along with adaptive shock absorbers to improve body control. Nearly a year after the concept version was introduced in Japan and Malaysia, the 2026 Honda Prelude is getting closer to the commercialization stage. With a bold sports coupe design, optimized hybrid technology and a carefully crafted driving feel, the Prelude is expected to mark an impressive return of one of the most illustrious names in the history of Japanese sports cars.
