The Hongqi E-HS9 in this article is a 2021 model, the highest-end 4-seat Flagship version, first registered in 2023. At that time, the car had a listed price of 3.688 billion VND and after rolling in Hanoi , the total cost was about 4.15 billion VND. However, this car is currently being sold on the used car market for only 2.3 billion VND. Although the seller did not disclose the specific mileage (odo), he affirmed that this is "an opportunity to experience a 4 billion product for just over 2 billion". Accordingly, the buyer can save nearly 2 billion VND compared to buying a new car.
Preliminary calculations show that the current asking price is about 42% lower than the total initial rolling cost – a very high depreciation rate after only about 2 years of use. Thus, the Hongqi E-HS9 not only depreciates more deeply but also depreciates faster than a German SUV like Mercedes-Benz, which is famous for holding its value well on the market. Although positioned as a luxury electric SUV, Hongqi E-HS9 faces many disadvantages in the Vietnamese market. One of which is that the Hongqi brand is still unfamiliar to most domestic consumers. In particular, the car model does not have its own public charging station system installed by the distributor, forcing users to charge at home through a household outlet. When buying a car, customers used to receive a free fast charging station installed at home. However, this is still not enough to convince consumers in terms of convenience, especially in the context of the undeveloped public charging station network.
In terms of performance, the Hongqi E-HS9 is equipped with two electric motors, with a total capacity of 542 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. The car uses a full-time 4-wheel drive system, and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The 99 kWh battery pack allows the car to travel up to 510 km on a full charge – an impressive number in the large electric SUV segment. However, a notable drawback is that the model has now stopped being distributed in Vietnam after the official importer, Kylin GX 668, ceased operations. With the official distributor "abandoning the product" - this means that after-sales services such as maintenance, repair or spare parts replacement will be difficult, posing many potential risks to long-term users.
Despite its luxurious design, high-end equipment and powerful performance, the Hongqi E-HS9 is showing the harsh reality of the luxury electric vehicle market in Vietnam: low resale value, lack of after-sales support and infrastructure disadvantages. With a depreciation of nearly 2 billion VND in less than two years, this is an expensive lesson for those who expect to invest in imported electric vehicles without a complete ecosystem.
