After returning with the U23 Vietnam team with the Southeast Asian championship, coach Kim Sang-sik frankly talked to the press about the next goal of winning the 33rd SEA Games.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik said: “Through this tournament, U23 Vietnam has regained confidence. The coaching staff will continue to monitor the V.League to find new players to strengthen the team. Our goal is to play our best in the tournaments we participate in.
Thailand has home advantage at the SEA Games in December. But other teams, including U23 Vietnam, if they prepare well, have nothing to worry about. We (Vietnam) also won against Thailand on their home field at the 2024 ASEAN Cup. That will be the motivation for the U23 players to confidently compete at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games."
Mr. Kim Sang-sik is a coach who has gone down in Vietnamese football history by winning both the ASEAN Cup and the U23 Southeast Asian Championship with the national team and U23 Vietnam. Continuously winning all official tournaments he has participated in, Mr. Kim Sang-sik is currently considered the "King Midas" of Vietnamese football.
To achieve the upcoming goal at SEA Games 33, coach Kim Sang-sik also needs to have careful preparations for U23 Vietnam. One of the things that needs attention is that young players will have the opportunity to compete in V.League.
Coach Kim Sang-sik said: “There are many good players in the V.League but they have not had the opportunity to show their abilities. Young players need to try harder to have an official position in the club. Through this U23 Southeast Asian tournament, I have seen many students clearly mature, so I believe they will have the opportunity to play in the domestic tournament.”
At the meeting to congratulate the Vietnam U23 team on winning the U23 Southeast Asian Championship organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Minister Nguyen Van Hung said: “Vietnamese people have the spirit of "not being arrogant when winning, not being discouraged when losing", so through this meeting, we not only encourage each other, but also have to determine a higher determination, not to be drunk, to rest on our laurels. From now until the end of the year, we have two very important tournaments: the 2026 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. With the determination set forth by the Federation, I suggest that the Coaching Board strengthen more solutions in training work to continue to win glory in these two tournaments".
Meanwhile, President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Tran Quoc Tuan hopes that the team will continue to promote their achievements to compete well in the two major tournaments this year, the Asian U23 Championship Qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games. The Vietnam Football Federation has also planned to prepare the team carefully and scientifically for the next two tournaments, with the goal of reaching the final match at the SEA Games.

After the U23 Southeast Asian Championship, coach Kim Sang-sik will have a short break before returning to professional work, continuing to watch matches in the V.League and the 2025-2026 First Division to select personnel for the team in the next training sessions. The Vietnam U23 team is expected to gather again at the end of August to prepare for the 2026 U23 Asian Qualifiers. After that, there will be a training session to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games at the end of the year.
At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, Vietnamese football only won third place. In the near future, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will aim for the highest goal with full confidence.
