In recent years, the dense growth of water hyacinth on many rivers in Hue City has become a worrying problem.
During the dry season, water hyacinths cover the water surface, causing blockages in waterways, hindering water transport, increasing water pollution, and affecting the urban environment.
In the downstream areas of the Huong and Bo rivers, as well as many inland waterways, the rapid growth of water hyacinth makes collection and environmental sanitation difficult.
Besides the dense water hyacinth, there are also many weeds, decaying trees, and floating waste, putting significant pressure on the local authorities in managing the water environment.

In response to this situation, the "Hue - A Plastic-Reducing City in Central Vietnam" Project (TVA/WWF-Vietnam Project) has provided Dan Dien commune and Hoa Chau ward (two areas heavily affected by water hyacinth) with a specialized water hyacinth harvesting and cutting machine each.
During the testing phase from May 28th to June 2nd, the units will continue to monitor and fine-tune some technical details and accessories to ensure the machine operates effectively in real-world conditions on rivers in the city – where water hyacinths cover the surface, there is a lot of sediment, the depth is shallow, and the water is often mixed with weeds, trees, and other types of waste.

Powered by a diesel engine, the machine can move independently on land before entering the water for operation, increasing flexibility during deployment in various locations.
After being cut and collected, water hyacinth will be processed and utilized as compost and fertilizer for agriculture , aiming towards a circular economy and reducing environmental emissions.
The water hyacinth harvesting and cutting machine is expected to be officially handed over to the local authorities in the second week of June 2026.
In addition to the two localities receiving direct support, other localities within the city that need it can also register to borrow the equipment to serve the work of cleaning the river environment.

The introduction of water hyacinth harvesting and cutting machines not only contributes to solving pollution and waterway obstruction problems but also is a practical solution to improve the efficiency of urban environmental management, aiming towards building a green, clean, and sustainably developed Hue.
