Disappointed because favorite university abolishes the form of considering transcripts

VTC NewsVTC News02/11/2024

Since 2025, many universities have reduced admission requirements and forced admissions, causing many students to be unemployed.

Since entering 10th grade, Nguyen Khoi Nguyen (born in 2007, Tra Vinh ) has decided to enter university by considering his high school transcript. Having been advised by many senior students that this method is easier to get into university, Nguyen has made a systematic study plan to have a good transcript with extremely high scores in all subjects.

Nguyen wanted to become a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, but recently, the school announced that from 2025, it will no longer recruit students based on academic records. This information made Nguyen feel disappointed and restless.

Following previous admissions, Nguyen said that it is very difficult to enter Ho Chi Minh City University of Education by considering graduation exam scores. In particular, the History Education major that Nguyen wants to pursue not only has a high entrance score (28.6 points in 2024) but also has the highest competition rate among all majors.

Therefore, Nguyen believes that considering transcripts is a "safe" option. With the investment and effort in 3 years of studying, Nguyen is quite confident in his transcript. "If the school stops considering transcripts, I will have to consider other options," Nguyen expressed his concern. Because even though he is a good student, Nguyen is not sure of "winning" when applying to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education by other methods.

Sharing the same disappointment, Tran Bao Ngoc Chau (born 2007, Hanoi) sadly said that from 2025, the National Economics University will not enroll students based on academic records.

"Up until now, I have always believed that the school considered the transcript because 3 years ago, my sister passed the exam thanks to this method. Recently, I read the newspaper and found out that the school has stopped recruiting students this way since this year," Chau said.

According to the research of a female student in Hanoi , in previous years, the National Economics University took about 10-15% of the quota based on academic records. This is a highly regarded school, with a large number of candidates each year, so competing for a ticket to the school is not a simple matter.

To become a student at this school, there are only three options: direct admission, combined admission, or admission based on the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam. However, Chau does not have an excellent student award or a foreign language certificate, so she cannot be considered according to the first two methods.

"If I study now to take the English certificate exam, it will be too expensive," Chau said. She will study hard to get a high graduation score because this is the only path she can choose.

In addition to Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and National Economics University, many other schools will also abandon the high school transcript admission method from next year.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that in 2025, it will maintain 3 stable admission methods: talent selection, thinking assessment test results, and high school graduation exam results. For many years, the school has not considered admission based on academic records. Before 2022, the school only used academic records as a condition for admission by other methods. However, the school has now dropped this requirement.

Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City Law University also do not consider admission based on academic records because they are concerned about unfairness for candidates because the exam standards and scoring in each high school are different.

Some experts recommend abolishing admission based on academic records because this is a form of early admission, causing many consequences.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thien Phuc - Vice Principal of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that most schools conduct early admissions when 12th grade students have not yet finished high school, which is unreasonable.

"Not to mention in the admission process, there are schools that require candidates to put their early admission wishes first in the order of their registration wishes in the system. This is not only unfair between training institutions but also takes away the candidates' opportunities," said Associate Professor, Dr. Phuc.

Mr. Dinh Xuan Phuc (Lecturer at Mathfun Mathematics Center) advises students not to "bet" on any form of admission because this will limit their opportunities.

Focusing on only one method brings many risks because each year, the admission regulations of each school change, not to mention the fluctuations in the graduation exam. "Therefore, students should study hard, take the exam hard and be flexible with the admission methods," said Mr. Phuc.
