Mobilizing resources to conserve and develop rare and precious wildlife

Pu Hu Nature Reserve currently has 27,000 hectares of forest, including more than 900 rare animal species. In order to preserve the unique genetic resources of flora and fauna, in recent years, the Management Board of the reserve has carried out scientific projects, through camera traps, discovering many wild animals such as wild cats, common muntjacs, silver-cheeked weasels, yellow-throated weasels, jungle fowls, front-faced chickens, pig badgers, etc.

Thanh Hoa province currently has 82,000 hectares of special-use forests, of which the fauna has 1,811 species, including 94 endangered and rare species. Over the past years, along with the synchronous implementation of solutions to prevent the hunting, transportation, trade and use of wild animals, the Management Board of conservation areas and national parks in the province has called for and implemented programs and projects as well as mobilized resources to conserve and develop wild animals, with priority given to endemic and rare animals. Up to now, many programs and projects have been effective, contributing to the conservation of rare animals in forest sub-areas.

Pu Hu Nature Reserve currently has 27,000 hectares of forest, including more than 900 rare animal species. In the areas where camera traps were set, many wild animals were found in herds such as wild cats, bears, deer, wild pigs; some rare and precious species were discovered, including yellow-hoofed deer, big-headed turtles, and bordered mountain turtles. Regarding the pheasant research program, out of 20 species discovered in the Reserve, 9 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the World Red Book. In particular, the unit has conducted research and bred some species such as white pheasants and yellow-cash chickens to release back into the natural forest.

Through the project program, the Reserve has promoted propaganda and mobilized people to conserve wildlife. In addition, in-depth investigation and monitoring work has also determined the distribution conditions and biological characteristics to protect these species and avoid the risk of extinction.

Mr. Dam Duy Dong, Deputy Director of Pu Hu Nature Reserve Management Board, said that through programs and projects, the unit has promoted propaganda and mobilized people to actively participate in wildlife conservation. The functional forces regularly patrol, protect and coordinate with functional agencies to research and evaluate species to determine the population status and distribution habitat areas of endemic animals as a basis for species conservation. The unit is investigating the current status and population distribution of animal species to determine ecological characteristics, food composition, habitat, population structure and factors threatening the living environment, the risk of population and individual decline.

At Xuan Lien National Park, in addition to investigating and protecting species, in 2023, the Park Management Board brought 60 civet and palm civet breeds for experimental breeding in captivity. To date, precious animals such as civets and palm civets have begun to reproduce. This success helps the unit create a source of breeds to release into the natural forest as well as exploit and widely develop the model for people in the buffer zone.

According to Mr. Pham Anh Tam, Director of Xuan Lien National Park, after the success of this model, the unit will create a source of breeds to provide to households. However, investing in this model requires a large amount of money, so there needs to be programs and projects to support people in raising civets and mongooses. In the coming time, the unit will continue to raise, preserve and develop species, contributing to the conservation of rare animals in Xuan Lien forests.

The conservation areas and national parks in Thanh Hoa province have been implementing more than 40 programs, projects, and scientific topics on wildlife conservation; thereby, they have investigated, discovered, and added to the list of 25 mammal species, 58 bird species, 14 reptile species, including the Nam Dong snake, and 9 amphibian species. The conservation areas and national parks have also researched and successfully bred many wild animals such as sika deer, jungle fowl, civet, palm civet, etc. to release back into the forest, contributing to the conservation of precious animals.

Mr. Tran Van Hung, Deputy Director of the Center for Conservation and Development of Organisms and Forest Environmental Services, Ben En National Park Management Board, said that through conservation projects, the unit has assessed the current status of animal species and their distribution ranges, thereby proposing solutions for species management and conservation; thereby contributing to raising awareness and responsibility of the people and local authorities in wildlife conservation.

Wildlife research and conservation programs and projects have helped nature reserves and national parks grasp the quantity, growth characteristics, habitats, and risks of decline in the quantity and quality of wildlife, thereby building programs and solutions to conserve and develop wildlife in natural forests.
