In IELTS preparation and practice groups on social media, many Vietnamese candidates shared emails they received on November 12th, notifying them about the correction of their IELTS scores.
Emails sent in the name of IELTS, by the British Council and IDP to some test-takers, announced a technical error affecting some tests.
In the email, IELTS stated that the incident resulted in changes to the component scores for the Listening and Reading sections, and could affect the overall score.
Candidates are required to log in to the IELTS online portal (Test Taker Portal) to view their updated results and download the latest official IELTS score report (TRF).
IELTS emphasizes that old score reports are no longer valid after the new TRF (Titles Reference Reference) has been issued.
According to reports, this technical error affects IELTS tests taken between mid-2023 and approximately September 2025. The common score adjustments range from 0.5 to 1 point.
A candidate taking the IELTS test organized by the British Council on May 18, 2024, said they scored 7.0 in Reading, much lower than they expected, and although they had doubts at times, they didn't dare request a review because they thought "the scoring system can't be wrong."
However, you recently received an email notifying you of the issue, and after checking, you found that your Reading score was adjusted to 8.5. This means the score for the Reading test was adjusted by 1.5 points.
The email also provides specific instructions on the next steps. After logging into the portal, candidates can view their updated scores and the new score report.
For those who have taken a One Skill Retake, it may take approximately 24 hours for the system to display the adjusted score.
According to many candidates who received the email, this score adjustment doesn't have much significance.
Most people have used their old (before adjustments) IELTS scores for purposes such as college admissions or studying abroad, and they no longer need the new IELTS results. A considerable amount of time has also passed.
However, according to IELTS, candidates have the option of a full refund of the fee or a free retake of the test. This benefit is activated when learners fill out the online form before May 1, 2026.
The refund processing time is estimated to be within 60 business days from the date IELTS receives all the necessary data.
