Thales and Indonesian defense company PT Len Industri announced today, June 18, that the Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400a) radars ordered by Indonesia will allow the country's military "to benefit from an integrated aerial imaging capability to detect all types of threats, from aircraft and missiles to helicopters and drones," according to AFP.
The photograph, taken on June 15, 2023, shows a Trac NG radar at a Thales site in Ymare, northwestern France.
The GM400a is a mobile radar with a range of 515 km and "incorporates artificial intelligence capabilities to manage the enormous amount of data" it receives, according to Pascale Sourisse, a senior leader at Thales, who spoke to AFP.
Ms. Sourisse also stated that the purchase of 13 state-of-the-art radars "demonstrates Indonesia's interest in monitoring its surrounding airspace, which is directly related to the situation in the Indo-Pacific." The amount of the contract was not disclosed. Each radar is reportedly worth several tens of millions of dollars, according to AFP.
The contract stipulated that Thales would build the radars and computer systems to process the information received by the radars, while PT Len would be responsible for building the stations to install the radars.
Increased geopolitical tensions have led to strong growth in the radar market, and Ms. Sourisse said this is why Thales has restructured its industrial organization and developed its production capacity in other countries as well as in France.
More than 80 GM400 and GM400a radars have been sold to 19 countries, according to AFP, citing data from Thales.
