International support is increasing for the Democratic Republic of Congo in its response to the Ebola outbreak.

Faced with the risk of the Ebola epidemic continuing to spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), international organizations, including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Union (EU), are stepping up humanitarian and emergency medical assistance to help the country control the outbreak.

According to the WHO, as of May 26th, the Democratic Republic of Congo had recorded 125 confirmed cases of Ebola, including 17 deaths, along with 906 suspected cases and 223 deaths suspected to be related to the disease. The outbreak has now spread to many areas in the eastern part of the country, which is affected by armed conflict, displacement of people, and a limited healthcare system.

UNICEF has transported over 100 tons of aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo via EU humanitarian relief flights. The shipment includes protective equipment for healthcare workers, medicines, hygiene kits, and other essential medical supplies to support the fight against the pandemic. According to UNICEF, this aid is expected to support nearly 100,000 people in the most severely affected areas. The agency has also allocated over $6.5 million from its emergency fund to support field response activities, and is coordinating with local authorities and international partners to implement infection control measures, ensure access to clean water and sanitation, and raise public awareness.

In addition to humanitarian assistance, the WHO is increasing technical support to the Democratic Republic of Congo in epidemiological surveillance, contact tracing, and patient treatment. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Kinshasa to promote disease response efforts and called for increased coordination with local communities to prevent the spread of the virus. According to the WHO, the current outbreak is caused by the Ebola Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Meanwhile, the EU continues to maintain humanitarian aid flights to transport medical supplies to the epicenter of the outbreak. Many other international partners are also increasing financial and technical support to help the Democratic Republic of Congo control the epidemic, as health authorities warn that the rate of spread of the disease is still faster than the capacity to respond on the ground.
