Indonesia 3-3 Laos
"We want to call Ivar Jenner and the Indonesian Football Federation is still trying," coach Shin Tae-yong said after Indonesia's draw with Laos on the evening of December 12 at Manahan Stadium (Surakarta, Indonesia). The Korean coach named Ivar Jenner - a player playing in the Netherlands - on the list for the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) but his home club has not agreed.
Jenner is a mainstay of the Indonesian national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. He was trained at Ajax and currently plays for the Utrecht youth team. It was not until December 21 that the Dutch club allowed Jenner to return to serve the national team, meaning he will not be able to play in the 2024 AFF Cup group stage.
The Indonesian team lost both points and players in the match against Laos.
"We want reporters to write articles so that Jenner can be immediately included in the Indonesian national team," Bola quoted Shin Tae-yong as asking representatives of Indonesian media agencies present in the press conference room.
Despite not using their strongest squad, the Indonesian team is still considered stronger than Laos. The 3-3 draw at home against the weakest team in the group was a big disappointment for coach Shin Tae-yong and his team.
In this match, Indonesia fell behind twice. The team from the archipelago had to rely on set pieces (throw-ins, corner kicks) to score. The home team put themselves in a difficult position when Marselino Ferdinan was sent off. Coach Shin Tae-yong openly criticized his players right in the press conference room.
"Regarding Ferdinan's performance, this was his worst match that I have ever seen," the Korean coach commented. "Both teams played well. The Indonesian team made mistakes that forced us to be satisfied with a draw. Unfortunately, I have to apologize to the Indonesian fans, especially those who came to watch live."
