Western Nghe An after the flood: Houses are still there but precariously close to the river's edge, people do not dare to return

After the great flood in late July, in the western localities of Nghe An, many houses stood precariously on the banks of landslides. Although the houses were not completely washed away, the insecurity, especially the fear of upcoming extreme weather, made no one dare to return to live.

The house of Mrs. Lo Thi Da, Xop Mat village, Luong Minh commune, is located close to the riverbank. After being informed and mobilized by the local authorities because this household is in a high-risk area, the family proactively moved all furniture and belongings to the opposite vacant land, which is higher, minimizing damage during the recent flood. During the inspection of the flood damage on July 27, Mr. Phung Thanh Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, requested households like Mrs. Lo Thi Da and families living in high-risk landslide areas in the area to comply with the direction and guidance of the local authorities and evacuate to a safe place during the storm season. Some households in vulnerable areas in Western Nghe An expressed their desire to be concerned about building riverbank embankments to stabilize their lives. Because floods come every year, the land gradually erodes, and their houses are at risk of collapsing. In addition, the households also requested to be soon arranged for resettlement areas to ensure their livelihoods. In the photo: A section of the riverbank embankment was damaged by the flood.
