During her CES 2025 keynote, Michelle Johnston Holthaus, one of Intel's two new CEOs, announced that the company is committed to the discrete graphics market. The statement comes after controversial comments from former CEO Pat Gelsinger, who left Intel last month.

“We are deeply committed to the discrete graphics market and will continue to make strategic investments to grow this space,” Holthaus said, in contrast to Gelsinger’s comments in November, when he suggested Intel would focus on integrated graphics in CPUs rather than making graphics cards for gamers.
The message from Intel’s new leadership comes at a crucial time for the company, which is facing a number of challenges. While its Lunar Lake processors for laptops have been considered a financial failure, Intel has seen notable success in the graphics card market. The Intel Arc B580 graphics card has recently sold out in most markets.
Analysts say Holthaus's optimism may be masking a plan to gradually exit the discrete graphics card market to focus on other areas such as AI (artificial intelligence), a trend currently being followed by major rivals such as AMD and Nvidia.
The Intel Arc B580 is a recently launched mid-range graphics card that is currently considered to compete directly with the Nvidia RTX 4060 and AMD Radeon RX 7600.
However, Intel continues to push its product line. CEO Holthaus also announced plans to launch the B570 graphics card - a cheaper option than the Arc B580, to reach more market segments.
While the Arc B580 has received positive reviews, it is not without its technical issues. Some users have reported experiencing lag and frame drops when using CPUs older than 5 years. This has not only happened with older Intel CPUs, but also with the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X.
The upcoming B570 model is attracting attention from the technology world. Although sharing the same architecture as the B580, this graphics card will target different market segments with different specifications and prices.
As Intel continues to maintain its position in the discrete graphics card market, attention will be on how the company balances its AI and graphics ambitions, as well as its ability to solve the remaining technical challenges.
