Shortly after the iPhone 17 went on sale, some customers reported that the rear glass and camera module were easily scratched. These scratches were most noticeable on display units at Apple Stores, raising concerns about the product's durability.
According to 9to5Mac , Apple stated that the primary cause stems from the MagSafe charging base used to secure iPhones in stores. After prolonged use, the metal ring on the charging base wears down, leaving marks on the phone's surface. Apple asserts that these are not permanent scratches caused by external materials, but rather residue from the base that has transferred to the phone and can be removed during cleaning.
“These defects are related to wear and tear on the MagSafe kickstand. Other iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, have also experienced similar issues at some stores,” an Apple representative told 9to5Mac .
To mitigate this issue, Apple has begun implementing two solutions. First, some Apple Stores have added silicone rings around the edges of display counters to reduce direct friction between the phones and the metal surfaces. This practice has been observed at the newly opened store in Ginza, Japan.
Meanwhile, Apple also instructed its employees to increase the frequency of cleaning display units. According to Bloomberg author Mark Gurman, the iPhone manufacturer instructed employees to add a type of salt to regular cleaning solution to treat stains from the MagSafe base. Although Apple did not disclose the details of the formula, Gurman said this mixture helps remove marks better than water or alcohol.
In fact, some users who have tried a similar method at home have reported being able to clean stains on their iPhones using a solution of seawater mixed with salt. However, effectiveness may vary depending on the case, and there has been no official confirmation from Apple regarding the recommendation of this method.
Currently, these measures only address scratches on display units in stores. Apple has not made any announcements regarding warranty or support for products purchased by customers.
