According to PhoneArena , it is likely that future generations of smartphones will ship without the popular Google Chrome mobile web browser. Instead, AI-powered web browsing will open up a new future for global mobile users.
Last week, Perplexity announced an AI web browser called Comet. Several leaks have suggested that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is also planning to release a browser this year.
Tech giants like Google and Apple have also begun adding AI features to their existing browsers, including tools for proofreading text and automatically summarizing articles.
Comet CEO Aravind Srinivas said that both Samsung and Apple are in talks to bring the AI web browser to replace Chrome. If the negotiations are successful, Comet will be pre-installed on all mobile devices out of the box.
PhoneArena notes that pre-installation could significantly expand Perplexity's user base by capitalizing on the consumer tendency to cling to default apps, a phenomenon often referred to as "browser stickiness."
Despite the initial success, Srinivas admits it's still difficult to convince mobile device makers to move away from ingrained options like Google Chrome and points to the challenge of overcoming user habits on mobile platforms.
Comet, which is in beta testing and limited to PC users, combines web browsing with Perplexity's AI features. It lets users query personal data like email, calendar, and browsing history and perform tasks like scheduling events or summarizing websites directly in the browser.
So far, only 3% of people who use AI on a daily basis are paying users, according to a survey by venture capital firm Menlo Ventures. That number could grow as generative AI becomes a more useful tool in everyday life.
