Invest 3 billion VND to build temporary embankment

For many years now, every rainy season, the people of Nhat Tri Islet have been worried because of big waves and high tides causing serious landslides. Ms. Doan Thi Hoa (65 years old) said: “I have lived here for decades. Every rainy season, when the tide rises, people have to worry about taking shelter elsewhere and wait for the water to recede before returning. Last year, the high tide and big waves destroyed both the kitchen and the houses of the people”. Mr. Khong Anh (75 years old), who has lived here since he was 13 years old, said that he has witnessed many times high tides and big waves pushing seawater into the alleys around the area, causing deep flooding and collapsing the walls of houses. The landslides tend to be more and more serious. At meetings with voters, he and the people in the group have repeatedly proposed that the government build a breakwater.

Mr. Tran Minh Chien - Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee said that last year's storm season, big waves and high tides caused serious landslides in the Nhat Tri sandbank area. Leaders of the City People's Committee and Vinh Phuoc Ward visited and presented gifts to families whose houses were damaged by the waves. The city also inspected the site and requested specialized departments to urgently develop a temporary reinforcement plan to limit the spread of landslides. The design plan for the stone gabion embankment has been sent to specialized departments and agencies for comments and has been approved by the Provincial People's Committee. To date, all related procedures have been completed.

Ms. Dinh Thi Nam - Chairman of Vinh Phuoc Ward People's Committee said that the temporary embankment project to prevent, combat and overcome landslides caused by big waves and high tides in the residential area of To Ha Ra 3 is invested by Vinh Phuoc Ward People's Committee. According to the design, the project has a sloping roof; a stepped-up gabion style; on top is a wave-breaking wall made of gabions; average height of 4m; total length of 140m. The total cost of implementation is more than 3 billion VND, from the city budget.

Expected completion in 90 days

On June 25, Vinh Phuoc Ward People's Committee and Nhat Minh Construction Design Company Limited (the contractor) held a ceremony to mark and hand over the site for construction of a temporary breakwater, expected to complete the project after 90 days. Witnessing the ceremony, Mr. Khong Anh happily shared: "We have longed for a breakwater for a long time, now that we know how to construct the breakwater, everyone is happy."

According to Mr. Tran Minh Chien, the temporary embankment to prevent and overcome landslides caused by big waves and high tides in the residential area of To Ha Ra 3 is one of the urgent projects that the city has paid attention to and directed strongly over the past time, and has now completed the procedures. Recently, the People's Committee of Vinh Phuoc Ward proposed that the city postpone the time for placing markers on the field and starting construction after July 1 to focus on completing the arrangement of commune-level administrative units. However, due to the urgent nature of the project, especially to ensure the safety of people's lives and property during the rainy and stormy season, the city has directed the ward to make efforts to organize the placement of markers on the field and immediately start construction to ensure it is put into use before the rainy and stormy season. In the long term, the locality proposed that relevant agencies study and advise the Provincial People's Committee to consider investing in roads and embankments around Nhat Tri Islet according to the plan.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Huy - Director of Nhat Minh Construction Design Company Limited said that the temporary embankment construction only encountered difficulties in transporting materials because from the main road to the construction site, we had to go through a very small alley, making it impossible to transport materials by car. The company has switched to waterway transportation. Up to now, construction materials, equipment, and workers have been prepared. "We are determined to strive to complete the construction on schedule or earlier than the set schedule," said Mr. Huy.
