On May 18th, Grandmaster Le Quang Liem achieved a major goal by competing in the DreamHack Atlanta 2026 tournament in the United States. This tournament is part of the "Road to EWC" system, the official qualifying round for the chess event at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026. The renowned chess player also celebrated this achievement on social media. Le Quang Liem is currently looking for a team to represent him at the EWC, and GAM Esports has emerged as the most suitable candidate.

In the Esports World Cup format, players don't compete individually. Instead, they represent an esports organization within the EWC system. Each discipline in this months-long event contributes points to the overall team rankings. A chess champion also helps organizations climb the overall leaderboard, giving them a chance to win the biggest title and cash prize.

Last year, "Chess King" Magnus Carlsen came to the tournament wearing the Team Liquid jersey. After winning, he received $250,000 in prize money and helped the American organization earn 1,000 Club Points. The next two winners were Alireza Firouzja and Hikaru Nakamura, who played for Team Falcons from host country Saudi Arabia.

Regarding Le Quang Liem, after securing a spot at EWC 2026, he stated that he is looking for a suitable esports organization to conquer new challenges. Among them, GAM Esports has emerged as the most promising candidate. The team, managed by TK Nguyen, is continuously "hunting" for Vietnamese representatives who have qualified for EWC in various disciplines, to compete under their yellow and black colors. GAM is also the only domestic representative to be an official partner of EWC.

They currently have teams for League of Legends and Arena of Valor, and collaborate with TE in PUBG and P Esports FreeFire. GAM has emerged as the most potential destination for Le Quang Liem in this case. The team also interacts with Le Quang Liem on social media platforms.

In a Facebook post, the chess grandmaster also expressed his interest in the eSports-style competition model. He controls the game via computer, without seeing his opponent's expressions, and the way strategies are implemented differs from traditional methods.

“The biggest difference is the atmosphere of the competition. In traditional chess tournaments, players are usually in enclosed hotel rooms, spectators are limited and must maintain absolute silence. At DreamHack, however, viewers can stand and observe from a very close distance, freely cheer, and create a very 'intense' atmosphere. To maintain focus, players have to wear headphones with white noise to block out surrounding sounds,” Le Quang Liem wrote.
