According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the number of tourists visiting Japan in the first half of the year increased by 65.9% compared to the same period last year – reaching 10.7 million. This figure of 17.7 million exceeds the 2019 total by 6.9%, marking a recovery in the country's tourism industry since the pandemic.
In June, Japan's tourist arrivals reached a new record of 3.13 million, marking the fourth consecutive month with over 3 million visitors. This growth was largely driven by a resurgence in Chinese tourism – five times the number seen during the same period last year.
South Korea leads the market for sending tourists to Japan, followed by China, Taiwan, and the United States. In March, Japan welcomed 3.08 million visitors, surpassing the previous record of 2.99 million in July 2019. This increase was attributed to the peak cherry blossom season and the sharp decline in the yen.
The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) estimates that tourists spent a total of 3.9 trillion yen (US$24.8 billion) in the first half of 2024. Of this, Chinese tourists spent 442 billion yen, primarily on shopping, outnumbering visitors from other markets in the second quarter. Foreign tourist spending in Japan increased by 73.5% compared to 2023 and 68.6% compared to 2019, driven by the weak yen and longer stays.
Real estate developer Mori Trust predicts Japan will welcome 34.5 million foreign visitors and achieve total tourism spending of 6.9 trillion yen in 2024, maintaining the current pace. The Japanese government also aims to surpass the record of 31.9 million visitors in 2019. At the current rate, this target could be achieved this year.
